Default Re: Wanda and Bull

One thing you have to keep in mind. The series finale was thrown together at the last minute. The cast found out in a memo that they were not being picked up for a tenth season. As a result, the episode left out certain characters significant to storylines such as Wanda. Her name was mentioned though in the Christmas episode from the last season. In my opinion, the writing for the entire last season was poorly executed. Characteristics and important continuing character storylines were thrown out the window. The series finale had to have been "Night Court's" worst ever. There were too many loose ends left behind that were the result of network executives trying to sell the show into syndication. Yet, Wanda was not the only character practically dropped. Remember Buddy Ryan played so wonderfully by John Astin. After Christine has her baby in the elevator, we never heard about Buddy again. Even the Wheelers who were a "Night Court" staple disappeared. It was very disappointing.

The whole final season was junk, which is always tough to slog through, when characters you've loved for like five or six years look awful. But as they said in the TV Tales, the original finale to air in 1991 was going to be amazing. Harry and Christine finally gave in, Dan got some big job, everybody had life changes. But Warner/NBC at the last second renewed it for 91-92.

The writing was just putrid that last year, and they through out the ending from the previous year. Not only did Bull ditch Wanda for Jupiter, but we never heard again from Leon, Quon Le, Buddy, the Wheelers, and even Yakov. All some of the funnier guest stars from over the years.

Post Re: "Night Court's" Ninth

What I don't understand is why in God's name did the writer's have to totally eliminate certain storylines when they entered season nine? Season eight could have been a great springboard for some excellent storylines. For example, what would have been so wrong with keeping Harry and Christine a couple? The writer's could have had some great fun with this. Instead, they entered season nine with Harry completely in denial of what happened (even though past writing had him obsessing about her for years). I mean, come on!!! Do you honestly think he would throw away his past feelings after he finally lands her! How would you feel if you finally won over your dream girl/guy after years of flirting only to say, in the immortal words of Christine, "I don't wanna be your girlfriend!" and Harry echoing the sentiment, "I don't wanna be your boyfriend." The whole thing just went completely against past writing. As for the whole Dan and the Phil Foundation crap, that's exactly what that storyline was---crap! Honestly, Dan with the Miss Mary Sunshine act was as nausiating as Oscar. It was a complete waste of a perfectly good character. Reinhold Weege had to be crying watching his characters take a downward spiral. Also, was it me, or did the persona of the characters completely change come say season eight. Harry lost his goofiness, which made his characters so different from others, Dan was beginning to lose his sex-crazed image, Christine was dating Tony and loosing her goody-goody image and the list goes on.

I can't say that season eight was totally bad. There were things that happened during each of the episodes that hinted at things to come. In this case, that's when I thought the writing was very clever. I picked up on several things. It was pretty interesting.

Well, I've rambled and vented enough. Whew!!!
