I can't think of any off-hand, but I've gotta say that Darlene has the worst ones. Maybe it's the way Robin Givens says them, but everytime she has a zinger for someone or thinks she's funny, I roll my eyes.

That's true. I also think they gave T.J. a real corny line when Darlene had some lipsticks and nailpolish stolen from her locker. When she asked who would want to steal such things, T.J. replies "Probably someone studying for a make up exam!" Were the writers asleep when they wrote this? ( I usually don't have anything bad to say about our beloved HotC. Please forgive me! I just had to vent!)

I remember TJ on the show when I watched as a child, and I thought she was cool. But rewatching the eps she's on as an adult, I think TJ is such a horrible black stereotype, and it's a trip that the audience hoots and hollers anytime she opens her mouth. I think another irony with it is that Rain Pryor is half-white and in actuality is as proper-speaking as one can be, but she's playing this girl who was telling Sarah that she's (Sarah) trying to be white. Unh-unh-unh. I know I'm digressing from "Worst Lines," but I feel that out of all the black characters that were on "HOTC," I think Sarah is the best. (I don't know about Aristotle...I can't tell from only the Xmas ep.) She's positive, upbeat, and down-to-earth, and does not need to use Ebonics to get a point across. I can't say Darlene is good, since she reminds me of so many black people who have kind of forgotten where they've come from and think they're so better than others. (I do remember the ep about Darlene finding out she was a descendant of a slave, but that didn't change Darlene's attitude much.)

You are so right! I cringe when the audience whoops it up when TJ starts talking 'bad'. Sarah is a good character and so is Aristotle. He's a nice guy who wants to be a film director though he never grew to be a very popular character.

"Who made you 'Our Lady of Literature'?!"
and "Someone who still dresses like Annie Hall is telling me about style?!" (Both Darlene, both from "The Write Stuff," the former being a dis to Simone and the latter a trash-talking reference to Simone.) |
