The original Dragnet aired from 12-16-51-9-6-59 This version starred Jack Webb as Joe Friday & Barton Yarborough as his partner SGT. Ben Romero. Yarborough, died after only 3 episodes were filmed. Barney Phillips then starred as SGT. Ed Jacobs for the rest of the season. Phillips, was replaced by Ben Alexander who played Officer Frank Smith & he remained with the series until it was canceled in 1959. Dragnet, would return 8 years later as Dragnet 67 with Webb once again playing SGT Joe Friday & Harry Morgan as Officer Bill Gannon. One interesting side note, during the course of the original Dragnet, SGT. Joe Friday was promoted to Lieutenant but when Dragnet 67 debuted, he was once again a SGT. The reasons for this were never explained.
