[INT: PIERCE RESIDENCE- DAY]

DR PIERCE: Manda Panda, time for school.
AMANDA (from upstairs): I'm not going. The first day of school is lame & to make things worse, I look hideous.
DR. PIERCE: I'm sure you don't look that bad. Besides I made your favorite lunch- Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich.
[AMANDA COMES DOWNSTAIRS WEARING A PINK POLKA DOT DRESS & AN ORANGE CARDIGAN.]
DR.PIERCE: Awww honey, you look adorable.
AMANDA: That's it. I'm changing.
[AMANDA HEADS BACK UPSTAIRS, BUT DR. PIERCE STOPS HER]
DR. PIERCE: No honey, we're running late as it is. You don't wanna be late on your first day.
AMANDA (sighing): I need to maintain my image, my reputation. I can't go around school looking like this (points at her dress.)
DR. PIERCE: You can & you will. C'mon time to go.
AMANDA: OK. But if I don't like it, do I have to go back tomorrow?
DR. PIERCE (giggling) Yep.
[AMANDA GROANS]

[EXT: SCHOOL CARPARK -DAY.]

[AMANDA IS SITTING WITH HER DAD IN THE CAR]

DR. PIERCE: Here we are.
AMANDA: I know. Can we go now?
DR PIERCE: Honey, I know starting a new school is hard at first. But give it time & I'm sure you'll make friends.
AMANDA: You're more sure of that than I am.
DR. PIERCE: Have fun. I love you.
[DR. PIERCE KISSES AMANDA ON THE FOREHEAD]
AMANDA: Dad I love you too. But when we are in public, in view of everyone, please don't kiss me. It will add to my total humiliation.
DR. PIERCE: I'm sorry.
[AMANDA GETS OUT OF THE CAR & CLOSES THE DOOR]
AMANDA: Bye Dad.
DR. PIERCE: Bye.
[DR. PIERCE BACKS UP THE CAR & DRIVES OFF, LEAVING AMANDA TO LOOK UP THE HUGE SCHOOL BUILDING]
AMANDA (Brain): Please, kill me now.

[MS. SMART, THE HOMEROOM TEACHER IS CALLING OUT NAMES]
MS. SMART: Chris Carter?

MS. SMART: Lily Morgan?
LILY: Here
MS. SMART: Amanda Pierce?
[EVERYONE LOOKS AROUND THE ROOM]
MS. SMART: Amanda? Is Amanda Pierce here today?
[AMANDA ENTERS ABRUPLY & SLAMS THE DOOR. EVERYONE LOOKS AT HER IN SILENCE]
AMANDA: Sorry I'm late.
MS. SMART: Are you Amanda Pierce?
AMANDA: Yes. Who else would I be?
MS. SMART. Ahem. OK then Amanda, take a seat.
[AMANDA TURNS AROUND AND SITS AT THE BACK]
LIBBY THOMAS (to Amanda) Nice outfit. That was so last century.
MS. SMART: Libby, there will be none of that. Amanda next time do be punctual. The last thing I want is for people like you to be late. Got it?
[AMANDA NODS]
MS. SMART: I can't hear you.
AMANDA: I didn't say anything. I think there is a total difference between nodding & saying yes. Don't you agree?
[EVERYONE LOOKS AT AMANDA& THEN AT MS. SMART, WHO WAS GETTING ANGRY]
MS. SMART: That's it Miss. Pierce. Go to the Principal's Office NOW! I have had enough of your wise cracks.
[AMANDA GETS UP & LEAVES WITH EVERYONE CLAPPING]
AMANDA: Cioa Ms. Smart.

[EXT: AMANDA'S LOCKER- RECESS]
AMANDA(Brain): This is the worst day of my life.Can it get any worse?
[AMANDA'S BOOKS FALL OUT OF HER LOCKER]
AMANDA (Brain) Correction....it has
[LILY MORGAN WALKS UP TO HER]
LILY: Hi. Let me help.
AMANDA: Thanks
[LILY HELPS AMANDA WITH HER BOOKS]
LILY: I'm Lily Morgan.
AMANDA: I'm Amanda....Amanda Pierce.
LILY: I know. What you said to Ms. Smart today was cool. No-one has said anything like that to her before. They're too scared.
AMANDA: I'm not
[AMANDA & LILY LAUGH.]
[LIBBY THOMAS & CHRISTINA BOUVIER WALK UP TO THEM]
LIBBY: Hey Lily. Who's your friend? Oh I see Polka Dot girl.
[LIBBY & CHRISTINA LAUGH]
LILY: Leave us alone.
LIBBY: Don't worry, we will. But Polka Dot girl, I'm sure we will get better acquainted soon enough.
[LIBBY & CHRISTINA LEAVE]
AMANDA: Who were they?
LILY: Libby Thomas & Christina Bouvier. They're the most popular girls in the 10th grade. Maybe even the whole school.

[INT: PIERCE MEDICAL- 4:00pm]
[DR. PIERCE IS SEEN LOOKING AT MRS. CHAMBERS' RESULTS]
DR. PIERCE: You're perfectly fine Mrs. Chambers. You just need some rest & some Anti-biotics. You should feel better in a few days.
MRS. CHAMBERS: Thankyou Doctor.
[MRS. CHAMBERS LEAVES AS AMANDA ENTERS. AMANDA QUICKLY RUNS UPSTAIRS BUT DR. PIERCE SEES HER]
DR. PIERCE: Hey sweetie. How was school?
AMANDA: Let's just say I have detention for the rest of my school life.
[AMANDA RUNS UPSTAIRS]
DR. PIERCE (Brain): Well at least she went.

[INT: PIERCE RESIDENCE-DINNER TIME]
DR. PIERCE (looking at Amanda): Honey, what's up? You're usually yapping away at the table.
AMANDA: Nothing!.......It's just that......
DR. PIERCE: What?
AMANDA: I miss Mom, that's all. I never though I'd admit that to you since you two...
DR. PIERCE: Seperated?
AMANDA: Yeah.
DR. PIERCE: Amanda, it was for the best. Your mother wanted to continue working in New York & I got transferred here to California.
AMANDA: You could have made it work if you tried. We could've visited her some weekends & she could've visited us some weekends.
DR. PIERCE: You know we are both busy honey. Commuting back & forth every weekend takes alot of time & effort. I think your mother would agree with me when I say that it wouldn't work out.
[AMANDA STANDS UP]
AMANDA: How do you know that? We had to move in this crappy loft above your medical practice, which quite frankly isn't getting many patients. We had to move to this...this TOWN and I had to change schools. Maybe if you weren't so caught up in your job, you & Mom would still be together. You always put your job before your family don't you Dad? Well I, for one, am sick of it.
DR. PIERCE: Don't use that smart tone with me young lady. GO TO YOUR ROOM!
AMANDA: With pleasure. I'm not that hungry anyway.
[AMANDA STORMS OFF TO HER ROOM & SLAMS THE DOOR]

[INT: AMANDA'S BEDROOM- 7:17pm]
[AMANDA CALLS HER MOTHER- ELIZABETH, WHO LIVES IN NEW YORK]
ELIZABETH (V.O): Hello?
AMANDA: Hey Mom, it's me.
[SEE ELIZABETH SITTING ON HER BED WITH THE PHONE IN HER HAND]
ELIZABETH: Hey Amanda. How's California?
AMANDA: The worst. Dad & I had a fight for the upteenth time. School sucks. I hate California. I wanna come home Mom.
ELIZABETH: I want you to come home too honey. Give California a chance. You'll like it in time.
[AMANDA IS LYING ON HER BED POUTING]
AMANDA: I think I'm at the end of my rope.
[HEAR A MAN'S VOICE IN THE BACKGROUND]
MAN: Elizabeth sweetie, get off the phone.
AMANDA: Who was that?
ELIZABETH: Hon, I gotta go now. Bye bye. Love you.
AMANDA: Love you too Mom.
[AMANDA HANGS UP THE PHONE & SMILES]

[EXT: BEDROOM DOOR- 8:50pm]
[DR. PIERCE HAS A TRAY OF FOOD & KNOCKS AT THE DOOR.]
DR: PIERCE: Manda Panda, I brought up some dinner.
[DR. PIERCE ENTERS AMANDA'S ROOM, WHICH IS SURPRISINGLY EMPTY]
DR. PIERCE: Amanda....Aman.....
[IT WAS THEN THAT DR. PIERCE SAW A NOTE ON THE BEDSIDE TABLE, PICKS IT UP & READS IT]
AMANDA(V.O): Dear Daddy.
I am really sorry but I hate California. I know you don't, so by all means stay there. I'm going back to New York to live with Mom. I miss her, I miss my friends, I miss everything. Please don't be mad. I love you, but at the same time, I hate you too for doing this to me. I really have to do this. I need to follow my heart. Please forgive me.

[INT: AIRPORT- 10:16pm]
[AMANDA IS SITTING ON A SEAT]
DR. PIERCE: Amanda?
[AMANDA TURNS AROUND & LOOKS UP]
AMANDA: How did you find me?
[DR. PIERCE SITS DOWN]
DR. PIERCE: That doesn't matter. All that matters is that I have found you. I'm really sorry for everything- taking you away from your friends, moving to California. But what I am really sorry for is putting my work priorities before you.
AMANDA: That's OK dad.
DR. PIERCE: No, it's not. You were right. Maybe if I put you before work, we still would have stayed together as a family.
AMANDA: I have to apologise too. Blaming you for all our problems was so cruel of me. I over reacted & I am sorry for the attitude.
DR. PIERCE: Truce?
AMANDA: Yeah, truce.

[CUT TO AMANDA & DR. PIERCE HUGGING]
