Just saw the episode where Fred, Lamont and Rollo were in jail. The scene where the obviously gay character in the other cell offered Fred a cigarette was cut out of the scene. This kills me...that was one of the funniest parts. Another case of censorship is the "Big Money Grip" episode, where Esther says "What did you say, ******?". This classic scene is cut out of the TV Land episodes as well. The fact that anybody is offended by these is almost laughable. Some people can't differentiate between depiction and promotion. It just goes to show that , despite the rise of "reality" programming, sexual content and diverse lifestyles being broadcast today, television sitcom dialog was much more cutting edge in the '70's.
There are several other instances of censorship that I've seen over the last year that I can't recall now. Does anyone else recall them? This is a great site, by the way. |

I think there's a Munster episode they won't even show and I believe they have censored other shows. I guess Roseanne and Married With Children will never come to TV Land.

Everything TV LAND cuts out of Sanford and Son Episodes, my local UPN station keeps in the episode. Which is why i only watch S&S on UPN |

I did not realize that Tv Land censored their shows, I knew they did a lot of editing and cutting the shows to fit their time schedules, but never censoring, wow, that stinks, I guess I have to see the mentioned Sanford And Son episodes on DVD

What I don't get is I watched many of these shows originally in primetime, many in the family viewing hour and a cable network won't air these shows the way they originally aired years ago. I don't get it.

I think I understand why tv land cuts certain things out. I believe they consider themselves to be a "safe" family oriented network a haven from racial slurs, cuss words, etc.
the editing does take away from the show some, but given the premise of the network I understand why they do it. its the same way with HGTV, I read an article about them that they deliberately do not run any commercials with sex and violence. |

When I watched the Rated X episode on TBS as a boy, the part with the man offering Fred a cigarette was left in. I haven't seen the episode on TV Land, but do they leave Fred saying to Wilona from Good Times, "Take your old faggoty jacket!"?

TV LAND cuts out the part in the X-rated episode when the man offers Fred a cigarette and touches his hand. Tv land did not cut out the part when Fred said "Take this faggoty jacket with you" |

Yes, it is an unfortunate aspect of our times. I was lucky enough to have taped the infamous (famous?) scene where Esther goes off on Grip! I will be adding it to my hard drive when I get some spare time to import the scene.
One question/comment....I am trying to find someone that has the episode where Grady is incharge due to Fred being away. Esther tries to bring over her church friends and Lamont and Rollo try to bring over some lady friends all being stopped by an "armed" Grady. In that episode, I believe that Lamont refers to Rollo as "Nathaniel" (his real-life name, obviously). Can anyone verify the flub...I can never get enough of hearing Lamont say "Yo Pop, would you dig yourself" :-)) Thanks a bunch, M |

I just watched the UPN version of that episode and I didn't hear Lamont refer to Rollo as Nathaniel. |

THERE ARE A NUMBER OF CUTS:
1. TRAFFIC TICKET...fred in the court house says" It's enough N****Rs in here to make a tarzan movie 2. JEALOUSY... when ozgood started doing his karate fred turned toward lamont and said"this N****rs crazy 3. SURPRISE PARTY.... fred turned toward rollo and said" bing bang boom..somebody get this N****R out of this room. I understand why they did this but when you cut a piece out of a scene you take away from the whole episode. |
