SHHHH!
I find that to be completely ridiculous. Discipline is one thing, but this is military school discipline. Kids need to be kids and kids talk to their friends at lunch. They can't in class, so they save it for lunch. What's next? Quiet recess? It sounds to me like the teachers just don't want to do their jobs so they force the kids to do it for them. And that whole, "We want the kids to eat their entire lunch" thing bothers me too. Forcing kids to eat everything on their plates, even when they're full, leads to obesity. If were nothing but healthy foods, that's a little bit better, but potato chips? When I was a kid, we had huge cinnamon rolls. Ugh. |

It seems like an impossible task, to silence a cafeteria full of grade schoolers.

This is one of the stupidest things I have ever read! What kind of grade school or for that matter Jr. High and high school students have time to talk in class? In grade school, I talked all the time at lunch. Friends have things to say at lunch! I hope this does not stay for long!!

I remember when I was in grade school that it wasn't that they want you to NOT TALK, but they want you to keep it down.

While I can see that they are trying to make a solution, they are totally going in the wrong direction. And whats up with the classical music?! What 8 year old wants to listen to that? I dont know how long the lunch is, but lets say its 30 minutes. Maybe they should have the first 10-15 minutes to be quiet to eat, then after they can talk and eat. I dont know. Maybe, if they added more lunches to the school, it wouldnt be as loud because less students would be there. If the faculty just taught them to use 'indoor voices' and penalized them each time they got rowdy, theyd get the hint. For discipline, if they talk too loud and get out of hand, how about they just take away their recess for that day? Then they will learn to behave. But seriously, these kids are 7-11 and while they know right from wrong, they get excited and then tend to yell. Big deal.

They used to have silent lunch in middle school for the people that got in trouble, and I remember I got it a few times. But not for the whole school! Thats just weird...

I remember in 1st and 2nd grade that at lunch there was a traffic light located near the back doors of the cafeteria that measured how loud the noise level was.
The format was this...... green light - noise was at decent and reasonable volume yellow light - noise was starting to get out of control a little (usually would go back to green, but sometimes it would go to.....) red light followed by a warning siren - noise level is really out of control and us students would have to eat silently for 10 minutes even when the light would go back to green after the siren went off |

That's so stupid. It's more like hell than school if you ask me (er, if there is a difference between the two). God, they're kids, just let them talk. It reminds me of my first few weeks of Jr. High where they said the kids were talking too loud so we had to have assigned seats in lunch. Some teachers must seriously be on something.

None of you would live in my middle school. We had Silent Lunches about everyday. They went up with a STUPID strike system. "If you all don't get quiet right now, we're going to have strike 1!"

My school had silent lunch... but that's only when we were being punished.
Enforcing it as a rule is ridiculous, imo. Lunch is supposed to be the best period in grade school, when else are those kids suppose to socialize?!? Quote:
