Off-topic--Guilty Pleasures - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Hello, all you good people! OK, you've all been talking about being teased for liking Wings. What other guilty pleasures do you have? I always thought a guilty pleasure was something you loved that you didn't tell anybody else that you liked it for fear of being ridiculed. Am I correct? If you know of another definition, please tell me!

My first is Barry Manilow. I have loved his music since I was a kid, when I was playing him on LPs(oops, I'm showing my age!). I love all the sappy songs, but he also does alot of upbeat songs, old standards in addition to alot of composing. He even wrote the theme song to 'American Bandstand'. For years though, critics haven't been kind to him and he doesn't get much respect from them(SOUND FAMILIAR?!!!), but he does have a huge following. My music taste is so diverse anyway. I could be listening to Barry, then listen to Chopin next, then Alice in Chains after that.

My other G.P. at the moment is Melrose Place. That show is so silly, it's fun to watch. I used to watch it when it was on Fox and I watched that from the start, so I've seen every episode. Now it's being shown on E! every morning, so I'm watching them again!!

yes I can relate to this subject, ever since I was young I liked Jerry Lewis, I was introduced to his acting/singing by my 2 older foster sisters at the age of 4 ... these days I come across some people that could care less about my admiration for him and diss him right in front of me and it really pisses me off sometimes,

Hey, Stace, did you catch the reference to Jerry Lewis on the "Jerry Stark" episode? After Lowell was talking to the French teacher on the phone, he kept dropping stuff and Joe says 'No wonder the French love Jerry Lewis'. I admire Jerry because of all he's done for MD research, and especially last year, when he had gained all that weight because of his medication and he still did the telethon. He didn't care that he had gained all the weight.

nope I didnt catch that ep. ... but I remember from the E! True Hollywood Story that Jerry mentioned that word got around that he said " if he didnt look good, he wouldnt appear on the telethon and help out " his kids ", which wasnt true at all and Jerry put it to rest after he gathered the producers and crew of the MDA telethon, sat them all down, and asked them if anyone heard those words come out of his mouth and not a single one of them spoke up. as far as the weight gain goes (you may already heard this mentioned) but Jerrys weight gain was caused by a type of steroid that he was taking to help him breath better (Jerry suffers from pulmonary fibrosis) but thank god above, he is getting better and his meds. were reduced

Regarding Jerry Lewis' weight gain.....It was very sad watching Jerry on last year's telethon.
He was up there on stage in front of everyone and actually APOLOGIZED for the "obvious cosmetic effects" of his illness and medication.

That broke my heart when he did that....It showed that he is obviously aware and ashamed of his weight gain...but he also mentioned that if he WASN'T taking that medication, he would be physically unable to work on the telethon....if he'd still be alive at all!

It must be very hard for Jerry to see himself that heavy. If someone has had a weight problem for most of their life, then they're used to the "up and down" weight gains and losses, and the periods of looking a little "bloated"....but Jerry was downright pencil-SKINNY for most of his young adult life, and still thin as he grew older, so this recent weight gain has to be new and somewhat shocking to him.

Sure, Jerry has always been known for having a big ego, but I DID actually feel sorry for him on that last telethon...but as Pheobe mentioned, the guy had the admirable guts to get up there and host it anyway....Good for him!

yes it was very hard on Jerry when the side effect of the drug prednisone came on, he even came pretty darn close to ending it all with one shot, (Jerry thought about committing suicide because the weight gain put lots of pressure on his lower back, where decades earlier he chipped his spine and damaged some nerves) thank god for his daughter Dani who came in the bedroom at the right time wanting to show her father her homework ... Jerry is a very strong person, hes been through so many medical problems in the past but he still comes through every single year for his kids and the MDA

Heres a little list of all the medical problems Jerry has been through since 1982:

1982 - He was declared clinically dead after a heart attack
1992 - He was diagnosed with prostate cancer
1997 - It was found out that he had diabetes
2000 - He was suffering from spiral meningitis
and most recently he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis ... and in 1978 he almost bled to death from a grapefruit sized ulcer that went undetected because of his addiction to pain killers that he was taking for his severe back pains

Wow, Stace , I had no idea Jerry had so many medical problems through the years. He keeps it up, he'll be rivalling Elizabeth Taylor. It's amazing they're both going after all they've both been through.

I'm sure you've seen 'The King of Comedy'. I FINALLY saw the whole movie a few weeks back on AMC(or I think it was TCM). Those channels are right next to each other on my cable system. 'TKOC" was one of those movies that I catch bits & pieces of through the years. There was one scene where Jerry was walking to the studio and I thought that this guy is just walking the streets and he's not being mobbed? That would never happen in real life. Of course, this was just a movie.

The King of Comedy was an excellent movie (I own it on dvd), I think both Jerry and Robert DeNiro (who played Rupert Pumpkin) did fabulous jobs doing their parts, although for Jerry it came more naturally for him because he said he had to do very little acting, he was simply just playing himself in the role of Jerry Langford ... and of course Sandra Bernhard who played the overly obsessive fan

Blues Clues (The Steve Burns Years)
H.R. Pufnstuf (I have all 17 episodes on tape)
Land of the Lost (The 1970's Version)

And although I'm not ashamed to admit this, I always get teased for it. I LOVE the Monkees. I have all 58 episodes on VHS. And a bunch of their CDs. I also have Monkees Bobble heads.

I love South Park. I don't know why. It's rude, crude, sick, twisted, totally un-PC, but funny as Hell!

I also like The Backstreet Boys. As Brian would say, "So sue me!"

Now Kristen, I can see the Backstreet Boys as being a guilty pleasure, but there can't be anything wrong with liking South Park. I would have a guilty pleasure in ABBA, but I'm not guilty about it, and I don't shirk from telling anyone so, lol. Hardly ever listen to them tho, now that I think about it a sec. I've been an X-Files fan for many years now, and one of my friends used to ridicule me about it allllll the time, and I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan. Not much to feel guilty about as far as I can see, and I'll FIGHT anybody who challenges me.
