Default Just a thought

I've noticed that a lot of popular TV shows from the 1990's (Like Friends, Seinfeld, Roseanne, Married With Children, etc.) use a lot of crude humor and stuff like that to shock viewers and see what they can get away with. I think the reason critics may have bashed Wings and called it bland is because Wings rarely, if ever, used any of that type of raunchy humor. The writers never felt the need to. They knew how to write material that was both funny and PG-rated.

I wish more sitcoms today would take after Wings instead of Friends. I'll never understand how Wings can be criticized and treated like garbage while Friends is highly praised and wins awards. (No offense, Phoebe and other Friends fans here.)

I wonder if present-day viewers (or 1990's viewers) thought that "Wings" was too "old-fashioned" to be considered "relevant" as modern-day sitcom comedy.

"Wings" always seemed more like the older, classic sitcoms of TV's earlier days (From "Lucy" to "Mary Tyler Moore") rather than the crude sitcoms of later years.

Sure, "Wings" DID get quite a bit raunchier in it's later years, but it never got as bad as SOME "hit" sitcoms.

I think that that might be it....the characters and scripts of "Wings" harked back to an earlier, "classier" era of TV comedy....and that just didn't sit well with many present-day critics, viewers and network executives!

I'm trying to create a family sitcom that would have the humor of the "classier" era of TV comedy (as Pilotguy put it). There would be no cussing or dirty talk. A show that the whole family litterally can sit down and watch. It would be gone in a week, though. If "Wings" debuted last season, now doubt it would have been cancelled.

Funny though, when I got back into "Wings" around 1999, I came to the show thinking it was a popular critically acclaimed series. And then I realized how it was really treated.

In a way, it's like the few of us here on the board have found this peice of gold and we're keeping it to ourselves. We're the only ones who really know how funny "Wings" is. And we're the only ones on the message board who can appreciate this peice of Gold, known simply as "Wings."

The worst part is that the people who currently OWN the goldmine (NICK) don't even realize what they have there!

As Lowell would say, "None taken", Snoopy. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Friends isn't for everybody. Even Rachel has been getting on my nerves for a few years now.
