Schwarzenegger To Run for Governor of California
Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger has finally ended the suspense around his political ambitions by announcing his plans to run for Governor of California. Schwarzenegger's announcement came as a surprise - advisers had said in recent days he was leaning against running in the October 7 recall election. It was also thought Schwarzenegger's pal and former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan was close to taking over his political team. The Austrian-born muscleman made his announcement during a taping of The Tonight Show With Jay Leno yesterday. He said, "The politicians are fiddling, fumbling and failing. The man that is failing the people more than anyone is Gray Davis. He is failing them terribly, and this is why he needs to be recalled and this is why I am going to run for governor." The actor will now count the likes of Hustler boss Larry Flynt and porn star Mary Carey among his competitors for the coveted position. If Schwarzenegger is triumphant, he will oust California's current governor Davis, who has seen his popularity plummet as the state grapples with a record $38 billion budget deficit. Davis is the first California governor to face a recall and will be only the second governor in America to be removed from office if the effort succeeds.
