Default "Friends: The Complete Fifth Season" on DVD - 11/4/03

http://tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=587

Warner Bros will be releasing Friends Season 5 to DVD on November 4, 2003. This should put the rumors of a September 2nd release to bed once and for all. We're not sure where that date came from, but it wasn't from anyone at Warner Bros.

Thanks to Matt Smith for letting us know about the date published in Video Business (Video Business reported an 11/14 date, but we got the correct one from Warner directly).

I'm just wondering if Warner Bros. is going to release every season on DVD.

I know the first four seasons have been released on both DVD and VHS, so hopefully the rest will too. They might be a little harder to find than DVDs though...

Default Complete Info About Season 5 set (plus Best Of S4)

http://tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=599

Following up on our news from a few days ago, we now have more information for you about Friends - The Complete 5th Season. It's definately planned for the November 4th release we previously reported, with a list price of $44.98 for 4 discs with a combined run time of 563 minutes for 23 episodes. As with the previous season sets, this will be in 1.33:1 video format with a 5.0 Dolby Surround Sound audio format. Extras announced are:
  • Audio Commentary : Producer's Audio Commentary on 3 Episodes: "The One With All The Thanksgivings," "The One Where Everybody Finds Out", and the landmark "The One Hundredth" from creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kaufman and David Crane.
  • Deleted Scenes : Episodes with never-before-seen bonus footage!
  • Documentary : 'The One that Goes Behind the Scenes' full length documentary
  • Featurette : 'Friends: On Location in London' behind the scenes featurette
  • 'Gunther Spills the Beans' promo for next season

As always, Warner delivers a "Best Of" release for the previous season, showcasing the best 4 or 5 episodes from the year featured in the last season-set DVD release. The Best of Friends - Season 4 is due for release on the same date, on one disc in a snapper-style case, with 183 minutes of show for $14.98. The Season 4 episodes picked by the show's producers are: "The One With The Jellyfish," "The One Where Chandler Crosses The Line," "The One With The Free Porn," "The One With All The Wedding Dresses" and "The One With The Worst Best Man Ever."

We have cover art for both releases:

I'm glad they're pushing the releases out faster, probably to have as many out by the time the series ends next May. Seasons 5 and 6 (if only for the Reese Witherspoon episodes) will be the last ones I'll buy tho. The latter seasons are okay but I don't know if I'm ready to see them again.

Actually, I think I saw the VHS versions at Wal-Mart, but I think they are Amazon.com too! They may be a little cheaper on Amazon.

does anyone know why or how the UK gets the seasons before the US? example at amazon.co.uk you can buy friends season 1-9 right now and in the states season 4 just came out.

why is this?

I read the reason the US is so late on getting the DVD's is because in the UK, there isn't the profitable syndication run, that Friends has been doing for 5 years now. One reason Warner had been so slow at getting Friends discs out was because the reruns are still generating big bucks for sponsers and good ratings. Warner originally didn't even plan to release the show in season sets, but instead in lame-o "best of"s, they only finally got around to releasing the seasons here because fans kept petitioning and demanding it after complaints about the "best of" DVD's.

At least now it seems like they are rushing Friends' DVD sets out faste and faster to get as many out by the time the series wraps next May. We could have season 7 or 8 by that time.

Kathy,

No offense, but why would you get it on VHS? You can get a decent DVD player for under $100 these days, and Friends DVD season sets usually only cost $10 or so more than their VHS counterparts.

Besides, the DVDs have easy access to episodes, and remarkably better video and sound quality (not to mention a longer life).
