Default Image of California on "The OC"

The commercials for FOX's new show, "The OC" have been bugging me. It shows California as a place where everything is fun, perfect, and our problems are minimal and only skin-deep.

Believe me, it's not as perfect as it seems on TV.

I would seriously hope people wouldn't honestly believe that "California" is perfectly represented on television and in the movies.

Not everyone is beautiful here.

Palm trees are NOT on every street.

It is not sunny every day.

30-something actors do NOT attend West Beverly High.

There are poor people in California.

Not every woman is tall, blonde, and stacked.

Not every man is a tanned, muscular surfer.

I have never heard anyone call a California Highway Patrolman a "Chip."

The water isn't that blue. Neither is the sky.

Well obviously California isnt all the same as it is shown on TV. Neither is Florida, New York, Alaska, and every other state. In another subject, I do want to watch the show.

Its TV. They make everything look better than it is.

Is this one of these shows where the actors are like 30 and in high school?

I don't think that the commercials are portraying California, or even the majority of Orange County correctly. However, I do believe that they are portraying Newport Beach correctly (or atleast the part that I know of). I can't wait to watch the show tomorrow. I just really hope that Newport/Huntington don't become tourist traps. That would suck.

Unfortunately there are many people who do believe that what they see on film is how it really is.

Wrong!

However, this is close to being the truth here in Santa Monica!

I'm not saying that California isn't a good place to live at, I personally can't imagine myself living elsewhere.
Actually, if you live within 2 miles away from the coast, there is palm tree on every street! LOL.

I just made this thread because the show makes Cali seem like a 24/7 party central, and Versace runway. It's not even close.

All I have to say is, with the way FOX has been advertising the crap out of that show, it had better be the best thing since sliced bread.

Yea, well I wouldn't set my standards too high. Whenever FOX seems to have a hit show on their hands, one way or another, they manage to cancel it before it's time.

I know, when I moved back here to Ohio after living in CA, people honestly thought it was all fun in the sun, and beaches on every corner

It's a good place to live, but I am glad I moved back here, I guess I am a small town girl at heart besides all my family lives here

Actually, they hardly ever used the word "CHiPs" on the show. They just referred to the organization as the CHP...and maybe people do call California Highway Patrolmen CHiPs now because of the show...I mean >C<alifornia >Hi<ghway >P<atrols...

"The OC" seems like it is going to be another one of those dumb 90210 like shows. Primetime soaps should NOT be about teenagers! Teen soaps are so....dumb....and bad acting......and gawd they just suck. Want to see a California primetime soap!? Get SoapNet or style. Watch "Knots Landing" and "Melrose Place." Much of the action on "Knots" in the early years took place in a garage (the type that is run by a mechanic)!

All TV Shows overly dramatize how something or some place really is. California is a popular choice of this, but it's not the only place. You couldn't imagine just how many times I've been asked if I have a horse or wear a cowboy hat just because I'm from Texas.

You know the 1996 movie, "Fargo"? That movie takes place in Fargo, Minnesota.

Guess what - they're WRONG. Fargo is NOT in Minnesota. It is in North Dakota. In "Fargo", they show Fargo as being a rural town - that could not be further from the truth. Fargo is really a metro city of nearly 100,000 people, and it's a border city, meaning it's right on the border but it's in North Dakota, and its bordering city in Minnesota is Moorhead, they're only two minutes from each other by car. I should know a lot about Fargo, I've been there millions of times and I have family living there.

I heard the funniest story about two years ago this had to do with this movie. In this movie, there is a note of some kind (I haven't seen the whole thing) where they claim there's buried treasure or something. I'm not exactly sure how that goes, but yadda yadda. About two years ago, some woman from another country came to the US, to North Dakota, with a copy of that note from "Fargo" and she proceeded to go look for the money! She died sometime during her search - I am not kidding.

Not everybody here are farmers - we have a few metro cities and we have our share of small towns. We just stand out a lot more because we have a ton of small cities with less than 100 people. I do NOT live on a farm.
