I don't think there was anything different about it. This is one show that started off good and stayed good. It's listed as never jumping the shark on their website.
Barney Miller, like all shows, just ran its course. It had a long eight year run, was nominated for an Emmy every season it aired, but all good things come to an end.

They focused on Levitt too much in the last season, for one thing. Hey it's only a fictional tv show and there's only so much you can write about the same characters. But them overplaying a character like Levitt proves they were runing outta ideas indeed.

The show wasn't cancelled. The writers and actors simply felt that they had run out of gas, so to speak, and wanted the show to go out while it was still on top. It was still a hit when it ended and ABC has intended on keeping it for a few more seasons.

I agree that the show had run its course. It ran eight seasons and was a high quality show from start to finish. I can't even say that about my favorite, Bewitched!! Much like Seinfeld, the cast/crew walked away at the top of their game.

Catlover has it right. They ended at the top of their game. Not many sitcoms or dramas do that! Jackie Gleason was the first that I can think of. The Honeymooners ended on that high note and most recently Seinfeld.

For the most part, I enjoy the early years of just about any TV show. All in the Family, Three's Company, The Waltons....all went on for just a bit too long. That being said, I love all three shows, I just enjoy the earlier versions a lot more.

Agree. Barney Miller was one of the first shows to leave the air while it was still hot. It had ran its course and I am glad it ended when it did. If it had continued, it would have gotten old and stale.

Default What was different about this show in the 80's

I watched Barney Miller every week for eight seasons and was really disappointed when it ended -- however in retrospect, I'm glad the show went out on top -- every episode was a gem -- now I just wish TVland or ION would acquire the show.
