Talking Re: Transportation

From what I remember, Archie drove a cab. To go futher places (like New Jersey) they took the bus. When going to the store, I think they walked. When Archie and Gloria went to work everyday, they took the subway. There must've been a subway station nearby. Archie did have a car once (remember in "Archie the Gambler") Edith explained that they had a used car when they lived on Union Street. She thought a man had stolen it one day, but Archie he had gambled it away to him. Most people do not have a car if they live in or near the city. I think they lived very near the city so they didn't need a car. Public transportation was always there. Hope this helps.

As usual, I don't know. I do know, though, that bus routes connect to subway routes. It's all in the plan. So, just because they didn't live next to the subway does not mean that they didn't have access to, and made frequent use of, the subway.

Archie moonlighted in a cab.
To get to the store, they walked.
To go out of town, they took a bus.
To get somehwere fast, they took a cab. (i.e. emergencies mostly)
To get somewhere else besides the places above, they took the subway.

I believe it was mentioned several times in the show that they lived in Queens.

The Bunkers and the Stivics lived in the Astoria section of Queens, which was near Corona, Long Island City, Sunnyside
and Woodside and I think Bayside.

I think a subway station was within walking distance to their house.

Thanks Katie. That makes sense. I wonder why they didn't have some episodes that included subway stories? Maybe they did. I don't mean necessarily the whole story. Maybe just say when Mike or Gloria or Edith walk in the door they might make a comment about something they did or saw on the subway. Anyone remember any subway stories or complaints or comments about subway experiences?

There was an episode when Archie, Mike, and Gloria were riding the subway and Mike punched some guy in the face for doing something.

Yeah, I thought I remembered them all (especially Archie)l sitting together on the subway. I hope someone will recall for us why Mike hit the guy and what happened. I remember that but I don't know what it was about or how it ended. Maybe the guy took Gloria's seat and got nasty about it?

In several other episodes when Archie or Gloria would come home from work, they'd tell their subway stories.

MIKE hit someone? Noooo!!!! Not MIKE!!?

Anyways, yeah, like KayEn said, Archie pretty often tells his "Subway Horror Stories";

Archie: Oh jeez, comin' home on the subway, some guy decides to throw himself on the tracks...holds the whole thing up for 30 minutes. He can't do it in the middle of the day, he's gotta pick the rush hour.
