Once you get past Ed talking Mr. Ed was a surprisingly depthful show, they had many adult elements. I'm serious. Sometimes BM was way too serious for a situation comedy. I'm serious here too.

LOL
That what made the show special, because it was a unique combination of being both serious and funny in a dry sense of humor kinda way.

What really sucks that Barney Miller is being replaced by Mr. Ed. a phenomenonal, well-written, well-acted, brillant show...

Foxy, I hate comedies that suddenly get too depressing. BM sometimes did!

I remember one ep Liz (Barney's wife) was crying in a really sad way. This is weird and wrong for a situation comedy. I new someoe who was a big fan of this show and even that individual changed the channel on it when it got too depressing (and Jesus as my witness I don't mean myself). The show might have been better as a drama. Reminds me of the 1980 film comedy Stir Crazy, another show about law enforcement that should have been better as a drama than a comedy. I'll tell you something some tv producer once said. He said kids don't expect inane sitcoms anymore (like say Get Smart or Mr. Ed). Kids have been totally ruined by sitcoms that try to mirror reality and fail miserably. He was right! Mash, All In THe Family, Barney Miller and a few others have been largely responsible for this mirror-reality-failed-sitcom trend. Taking a tv too show too seriously and trying to have it mirror reality is foolish. Its just a tv show. Barney Miller is just a tv show. Its a whole fiction and nothing more. At least we aren't as stuck with BM as we are with the last eight years of MASH. Thank God.
