Default And You Think It's Hot Where You Live!

Here are the temperatures at Death Valley, Calif. for the past 20 days or so... (From The Los Angeles Times) In degrees F.

Date Max / Min

July 3 - - - - - - 116 / 94
4 - - - - - - 120 / 84
5 - - - - - - 120 / 86
9 - - - - - - 119 / 80
10 - - - - - 126 / 85
11 - - - - - 126 / 87
12 - - - - - 128 / 91
14 - - - - - 125 / --
15 - - - - - 125 / 89
16 - - - - - 124 / 93
17 - - - - - 124 / 91
18 - - - - - 126 / 96
19 - - - - - 116 / 86
20 - - - - - 120 / 92
21 - - - - - 124 / 95
22 - - - - - 125 / 99
23 - - - - - 122 / 102
24 - - - - - 122 / 103
25 - - - - - 116 / 98

I can't imagine a low temp. of 103 degrees! The Times has listed Death Valley in the weather section since 1981, and I've kept a record. The overnight temp. has been 100 degress or more a few times before- 1994, 126/101; 2001, 120/100 and 2002, 127/100. The highest max. temp. I've seen was 129 about 5 years ago. Death Valley is believed to have the highest average July maximum temps. anywhere in the world. The average high in July is 116.3. The hottest parts of the Sahara desert and parts of the Middle East average 108-110 degrees.

I love Checking the weather in Death Valley

One time I checked the Temp in a neighbouring town on my Weatherbug and it said it was 133°! I'm not sure if that was correct or ever confirmed though.

That temp. sounds suspicious. Death Valley is the only place in the U.S. that has exceeded 130 degrees. The next hottest town is probably Gila Bend, Ariz., but I don't know what the record high there is.

Here's a fact that many people don't know...

The place where they measure the temp. at D.V. (Furnace Creek Ranch, ele. -178 ft.) is not the hottest area. The temps. at Badwater (ele. -279.8 ft.) averages 4 degrees higher than at Furnace Creek). Also, the sand dunes area to the north of Furnace Creek is slightly hotter.

Another fact- when the record high of 134 degrees (set on July 10, 1913) was reported, it was said that the thermometer burst when the temp went even higher (the story has not been officially verified).

You might enjoy Mt. Washington, New Hampshire. At an elevation of 6,288 feet, the all-time high recorded at the summit is 72 degrees (set in Aug., 1975 and June, 2003). I just checked the Mt. Washington website; it is currently 52 degrees on the summit.

Dang

The hottest temp ever recorded was in the late 1910s in Pakistan it was 136°. I cant imagine that kind of heat...

The coldest temp was in Russia at -133°.

Now 136° may be extreme, but I think -133° is the most extreme temprature you could expiriance.

It makes me feel better about living in Florida where we have about ten months of "summer." It was only 91 here today.
