Anyone else notice Lamont is alot meaner and Grumpier in the first season than the rest of the series? It seems almost everything Fred says makes Lamont angry. Dont get me wrong they never got along that great but they sure got along better in the later seasons than they did in the first.
Fred also seemed to Insult Lamont less. Its almost as if they traded roles. |

I agree. I liked his character better when he was mean, though.

Lamont was meaner in the first season. That may be due to the script, I read once that in the first season they used the scripts from the British counterpart to Sanford and Son, it was called Steptoe and Son. I have never seen the British version, but I have heard it is darker and gloomier than the american one.
Also, in later seasons, Lamont got too soft he didnt oppose his pop enough then. sylvia |

I agree, I didn't like his character at all in the late late seasons. I don't think he added anything to the show. I guess they figured he had to grow up. But he grew up into an even bigger Dummy than the origional.

I dunno...I kinda prefer the kinder, gentler Lamont from the 2nd season on, as he was WAY too disrespectful to his father in the earlier episodes (in the pilot episode's epilogue, after he was convinced that Fred had done himself in, but, in reality, was just hiding in the closet, Lamont chases the poor{?} old dude up the stairs...WITH A BROOM!! Yes, it WAS funny, but still...)
