Default Roomates

Anyone want to share their college roomate experiences? I just got my letter with my dorm building, number, roomate, etc., and I was just wondering about a few things. How did you feel when you found out that you were going to room with someone? Excited...scared.....anxious? Also, dorm life. Did you like it? Are there any things I should avoid or anything I should do? I found out I'm haring this huge dorm with three other people. It has two separate bedrooms and a bathroom. It's also on the 5th floor and there's no RA on the floor (Since there's only 20 people a floor in this dorm, one RA monitors two floors, and lives on the even one). Any answers or general tips would be appreciated.

Well, I just finished my freshman year at Delaware State University and my roommate was at first, kind of troublesome, but he became cool after we had a long discussion. He just thought that he could do some things and I would be ok with it, but I told him that I wasn't ok with it, and that he needed to respect my feelings. He was from New York and I'm from Virginia so we talked to each other about our likes and dislikes, movies, music, and other stuff.

We were in the only male residence hall that had air-conditioning and the only residence hall where the RAs were very cool. They allowed us to do some crazy stuff like bring microwaves and small refrigerators (which are not allowed at DSU), sneak people in our rooms at all times of the night without signing them in, and basically just let us do things the way we wanted to do them. I was on the "B" wing and our RA rarely had to scold us.

A good tip would be to know your RAs, roomates, and other people who live in your residence hall as soon as you can. I made the mistake of getting to know them kind of late.

Me and my roomate's dorm room was crazy because we had two of everything (TVs, VCRs, phones, computers, etc.)

Another tip: avoid getting on the RAs bad side, because they can make your life at the residence hall a living hell. I knew a few people that had to go through that, and it wasn't a pretty sight.

Overall, just have fun, do what you're told (from the RAs), and dorm life will be a wonderful experience.

Dorm life isn't so bad. I was in a dorm freshman and sophomore year. I've had really good luck with roommates, and really bad luck. It depends.

Freshman year everyone's new and nobody knows all the ropes yet. My freshman roommate and I got along really well at first, but by the end of the year we were ready to kill each other. But sophomore year I got lucky and my roommate and I became best friends.

What it takes is two people that are willing to compromise. If one of you likes to stay up until 2am reading or studying, and one has to get up for an 8am class, you gotta talk If one of you likes to watch TV all day, while the other one is trying to study, you gotta talk. If one of you likes to practice their piccolo while the other one is trying to write a midterm... well, you get the idea What it really takes is a mutual respect for each other. I'm sure you'll be fine Good luck next year!

If you ever need advice, just PM me, Chris.

Anyway, I picked my roommate, so as for just getting one assigned, I don't know about that.

But getting an assigned roommate might be better.

I was in a suite of six people. We each had our own tiny room and the rest was a common area. Two of them were nice, two I hated, and one kept to his own social circles and didn't interact with us much. After a few semesters, friends and I got our own room in the dorm. You might get lucky or not.
