Default Carroll and Jean on Donny and Marie

I rewatched an old episode of the "Donny and Marie" show from 2001 in which Carroll O Connor was the featured guest. They surprised Carroll by bringing out Jean Stapleton. It was obvious from the show that the two of them deeply care about one another and their friendship was as strong as ever. Carroll was promoting his then new movie "Return to Me" and Jean was speaking of her one woman show called "Eleanor." Carroll said he got the Archie voice from James Cagney and Jackie Gleason; he borrowed various things from these two great actors to include in his portrayal of Archie. He happily did the voice for Donny and Marie but Jean refused to, saying that she only did it for a great deal of money and that she did not like to go back and do something that she had done before. Even monetary offerings from Donny could not change Jean's mind. Incidentally, Jean said she acquired the nasal voice of Edith from a character she did in "Damn Yankees." Both actors spoke fondly of the show and how amazed they are of its enduring popularity. Carroll told Donny and Marie that in his opinion "All in the Family" was not a sitcom but a satire. They also spoke of how Carroll finally, through Nick at Nite, got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. If I am not mistaken, this was probably the last time Carroll and Jean appeared together, with Carroll passing shortly after this show.

Man, I'd like to see it! What channel(s) does/do "Donny and Marie" re-runs come on?

Talking

I kind of understand why Jean didn't do the 'Edith' voice even though she was offered money. It's kind of like if you talked a famous singer from long ago and you asked them to sing a song that they don't play anymore. You're basically asking them to work. Also, maybe she can't do the Edith voice anymore. Just a few thoughts. But I wish I could see that! In 2001, I wasn't into AITF yet, so I missed the show. Would someone be able to tape it for me? If so, let me know! Thanks.

I wish I could have seen that show. It would have been nice to hear them talking about the show again.

I remember seeing Carroll on an episode of Laugh-In and he gave that serious Archie look, it was funny.

I have been on an AITF kick lately, and saw the clip of them on YouTube. Some posters there slammed Jean for refusing to do the voice, but I understand her position - she didn't want to go back, however briefly, sand redo it. I remember a Larry King show where Tony Randall didn't want to do the Felix sinus "honk." Also, since it was so long after she played Edith, it probably would have taken her some practice to get into that voice again. I found Donny pulling a $20 out to be humorous, and Jean took it as such. I loved seeing how much she and Carroll loved each other as friends and colleagues.

As for Jean not doing the voice. I would have said "Its has been so many years and I'm so out of practice. It won't come out the same". As for Carroll when he did Heat of the Night, his voice pattern was so slow. I expected a fast pace Archie sound. I thought Jean did Eleanor Roosevelt in the late 1980's.
