Dated Remarks - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

How do you feel about remarks made on LITB that were topical when the show was first aired, but might not be understood by viewers now?

An example would be when Ward was on a second-floor landing and listened in to a party being given by Wally and said, "I feel like a U-2 pilot" (A U-2 was an high-altitude airplane used to gather pictures as it flew over countries that were not friendly with the United States).

Another example were remarks that included a reference to a another TV show that was on at the same time as when an episode was filmed (It was usually an ABC Network program like LITB) - "Who do you think you are, 'Ben Casey'?".

Also, on an episode just a few days ago when Wally is learning how to drive Beaver says that Wally could drive as fast as 65 mph on the freeway and June goes absolutely NUTS when he mentions that. Back then, 65 mph was what 90 or 100 mph would be now. It sure does show how times have changed!

The speed limit on the freeway and some highways was 65 in 1960, same as it is now.

The episode about the girl paperboy is an interesting one in this subject about outdated ideas and phrases .Back then a girl paperboy was very unlikely. Now there are mom's dad's and daughters being ''paperboys'.

When I first started watching LITB it was the early 70's and most of the shows they referenced were still being played in reruns... often by the same station showing LITB! Still haven't seen a single "Peter Gunn" episode, though...

I think they played this just right. Beaver feels much less dated then the '80's sitcoms my girlfriend loves to watch (Lybia references, for example...).

My favorite references to TV shows of the time:

"Boy, I don't think the guys on 'Route 66' have been there yet!"
--Beaver, learning that Eddie is going to be spending his summer on a fishing boat bound for Alaska in "Summer in Alaska"

Larry Mondello's sister's photograph of Kookie from '77 Sunset Strip' tacked up on her bedroom wall.
--According to Larry, his sister has a crush on Kookie in "Larry Hides Out".

'Route 66' (which aired on CBS from 1960-1964) and '77 Sunset Strip' (which aired on ABC from 1958 to 1964) are two of my favorite TV series. Like 'Leave it to Beaver', I discovered both series through syndication.

BUZ MURDOCK (GEORGE MAHARIS) AND TOD STILES (MARTIN MILNER) OF 'ROUTE 66'.

GERALD LLOYD KOOKSON III (KOOKIE, PLAYED BY EDD BYRNES) ON '77 SUNSET STRIP'.

Those are interesting obsevations, Laurel! What did you think about the music that Beaver was totally tuned into? So much so that he could't here Wally's warning about having to pay for the records?

Beav wasn't exactly listening to 'Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb', but I got a kick out of what passed for rock and roll in Mayfield, circa 1962.

It amazes me that the fishing boat in Alaska scam still goes on today. They convince young people that they'll make a ton of money, so long as they can hang in there, on a several months expedition to the freezing waters well outside of the coast of Alaska.
