Default "WINGS" Missed The Boat On This....

I think that it's a shame that the series never took advantage of the musical talents of two of it's cast regulars, Crystal Bernard and Steven Weber....plus anyone ELSE on the show who may have been able to sing and/or dance.

Classic sitcoms like "I Love Lucy" and "Dick Van Dyke" would have episodes where the cast members with musical talent could occassionally "strut their stuff" and perform.

A PERFECT episode for this to happen on "WINGS" would have been that one where the various cast members describe their off-season jobs.
Instead of doing that magic act, Helen and Brian could have worked up a musical song-and-dance act....It would have put a different slant on the "performing for Roy's Lodge buddies" idea, but it could have been very entertaining and a lot of fun!

I didn't even know Steven Weber could really sing until that episode where he was singing to Alex at the airport. "You're dying out here, too". I still laugh at that part and I found myself singing along with him. Then I heard he was going to be in 'The Producers'. Wish I could've caught him on Broadway. As we all know, Crystal was more into music than Steven, and I don't know why they didn't delve more into her talents. There was the episode where they were at Fay's at Christmas and they were singing Christmas carols and there was a very small chance to hear what a good singing voice Crystal has.

Pilotguy, there was one thing you had mentioned on another topic about Crystal not being able to get many acting jobs since Wings. Do you think maybe acting has taken a backseat to her singing and songwriting? From what I've read, she sells alot of her songs to other singers.

Hmmm, that could be...but if she IS putting acting on the back burner so she can concentrate on her music (which I know is very important to her), what a WASTE of acting talent....Crystal has wonderful ability in that department. Her comedy timing and delivery are superb, and she can really bring a tear to your eye in her serious moments.

I think the closest that they came was that two-parter about the Hackett brothers buying Helen a new cello....the subplot had Faye, Roy, Lowell and Antonio acting, singing and dancing in a local production of "Phantom Of The Oprah"....what a chorus line THEY made! I can hear them now:

"Phantom, Phantom, I don't believe in Phantom...."

I think that Roy said it best: "We stink on ice!"
