Default I don't get it! Scenes or lines that made no sense to you

No matter how many times I've seen these two certain scenes, I still have to wonder what they're talking about. These two come to mind:

1. Dorothy says something about how "Dever-rox" is only pronounced that way in limericks when someone mispronounces her last name.

2. Dorothy yells at Sophia, "It wasn't my confirmation dinner!?" (Rose had found out Miles was with the Witness Protection Program) and Sophia had just told a story about how she cooked something she thought was chicken.

I'm confused sometimes by the outdated references, like the stuff from the Reagan era. I can only remember one line I didn't get off the top of my head - Dorothy's answer to someone was "That's why God told Jerry Falwell to go down that waterslide in a cheap suit."

Okay, here's an answer and a question of my own...

Regarding the bit about the confirmation dinner, I think Dorothy is just having a horrible realization that Sophia might have served her "wasn't really chicken" dinner on her special occasion.

In another episode, Rose makes some sort of comment about having done detective work and Dorothy says something like, "You figured out which one was Shinola (sp?), did you?" and Rose says, "The hard way". HUH?

OK... I think I can clarify a few things.

1. DeverUCKS is how she said it. It's supposed to rhyme with a bad word. Limmericks are often "dirty," so that's what was implied.

2. Sophia said something about cooking for a big group of people, and the meal was something normally not eaten. That's why Dorothy was shocked when she said "It wasn't my CONFIRMATION DINNER, Was IT?!?!?!"

3. There is dated stuff in there. Jerry Falwell went down a waterslide because God told him so. A teenage boy in Germany got in a plane and flew it all the way to Moscow... during the beginning of the end of communism. (This was in the 'Rose is worried about nuclear war' episode.) You just had to be there to know it. You never hear the girls mention the internet, cell phones, Jennifer Lopez, etc... because they weren't around.

4. There is an old saying... "You can't tell S**T from Shinola." Shinola was a floor wax... an obvious difference from the first object. So, Rose had done something to figure out the difference... "the hard way."

I hope these explanations help a bit. I grew up in the 80s, so a lot of these reference points I remember.

I've never understood the humor in this joke....

In the episode when Sophia's sister comes to visit for the 2nd time, Rose is talking about the dessert she made...and Rose says "I'm not one to blow my own gernurkenflerken" and Sophia says "I can't even reach mine" and the audience roars with laughter. But I don't get what Sophia meant by that.

I guess everybody thought the word gernurkenflerken was a dirty reference to everybody but Rose.

I'm confused about a line-there was a scene where the girls are talking in the kitchen(gee, really?!!!) and they're talking about sex(again, gee, really?!!!). Well, they're talking about orgasms, although the word orgasm never comes up. Rose asks Blanche if she has ever "you know" and Blanche replies 'Yes, many times, many, many times'! and the Rose asks Dorothy if she had ever 'you know' and Dorothy replies,"how could I, it always seemed to happen when I wasn't in the room", or something like that. I never got Dorothy's comment. Could somebody help me?

Dorothy might have been referring to stan either cheating on her or masturbating probably the last one.

I think she means, that the sex was over so fast that she could never achieve it.

Thanks for helping out. Both good answers. I thought maybe it had something to do with Stan and how quickly it was over. Poor Dorothy. I'm glad the writers let Dorothy finally find happiness by hooking her up with Lucas.
