Subjects of Silence

Think what might have happened if Jo hadn't gone to Eastland? What if she had spent those years back in the Bronx? Well, you're about to find out...

Jo wakes up to loud music blaring from her alarm clock along with sirens and police cars going up and down the street. Groaning, she gets up out of bed. Hearing stuff like that every morning wasn't unusual to Jo, especially in her neighborhood, but it still got on her nerves sometimes. Loud raps on the apartment door interrupts her thoughts.

Jesse- Jo, get up or I'm leavin' without ya!
Jo- Ugh, I just woke up. Can't ya give me 10 minutes?
Jesse- Ya got 5.
Jo- *Rolls her eyes and gets dressed*
Jesse- Today would be nice...!
Jo- *Grabs her keys and opens the door*
Jesse- Took ya long enough!
Jo- *Glares*

They leave the apartment building, being late for school as usual. Since Jo's mom threatened to take her motorcycle keys away, she and Jesse stopped ditching school. They run in, getting to their homeroom quickly before their teacher walks in. There has always been a rumor that their homeroom teacher, Matthew Jerome, moved onto sexually harrassing a different girl every semester. This year though, he'd set his sights a little more quickly. He walks into the classroom and sits down at his desk. He looks at the role call list, then his lesson plan. After going through everything, checking and marking off names, he turns his attention to the class.

Mr. Jerome- I trust you all did your homework last night?

The class is silent, except for the occasional cough or whisper. He goes around collecting the essays he'd assigned the previous night. He walks back to his desk, puts on his glasses and starts grading the papers. After a few minutes he comes to Jo's paper and peers over his glasses at her.

Mr. Jerome- Jo, could you come up here for a minute, please?

Jo walks up to his desk and stands next to him. While he discusses her paper with her, he reaches behind her, slipping a hand into her back jean pocket. She notices, but doesn't say anything, not really wanting to draw attention to herself. She stands there continuing to talk to him as if his hand wasn't even there. When he's done discussing her paper with her he slips his hand back out of her pocket.

Mr. Jerome- *Smiles* Thank-you, Jo. You can go back to your seat now.

As he continues to grade the papers, Jo goes back to her seat, feeling a little uncomfortable now around Mr. Jerome. The bell rings signaling all the girls to go to P.E. He watches intently as Jo walks out with the rest of the girls. They all go to the locker room to get changed. After everyone's all ready, they all walk to the gymnasium.

***After P.E.***
They all shower, put on the clothes they had on before and wait for the bell to ring. As Jo's getting her books together, Jesse walks over.

Jesse- Hey, Jo, ya feelin' alright?
Jo- Oh, yeah, fine.
Jesse- Hmm, ya ain't actin' like it. Somethin' botherin' ya?
Jo- Nah, I'm fine, Jess.

Jesse doesn't really believe her, but she lets it go. After the bell rings, Jo decides to go to the office. She played what Mr. Jerome did over and over again in her mind, trying to believe it had actually happened. When she reaches the office, she's a little hesitant. Being in that situation was something she couldn't handle by herself and even though she knew that, something made her have to keep convincing herself. She finally opens the door and walks in.

Jo- Is Mr. Morris busy?
Secretary- Wait a minute, I'll check.

She knocks on his door and goes in. She comes back out after a minute or two and sits back down at her desk, looking at Jo.

Secretary- He can see you.
Jo- Thanks.

She walks in and when Mr. Morris sees her, he gets a panicked look on his face.

Mr. Morris- Okay, who'd you beat up?
Jo- What? Oh, nobody. I just wanted to talk to ya.
Mr. Morris- *Gets a look of relief on his face* Ah, well, in that case, what can I do for you?
Jo- It's about Mr. Jerome.
Mr. Morris- Oh? What about him?
Jo- Well, he uh, slipped his hand into my back pocket
Mr. Morris- *Sighs* I've had it up to here with you girls accusing Mr. Jerome of such actions.
Jo- What? No, Mr. Morris, I --
Mr. Morris- That's enough. Get back to class. *Goes back to his work*

Jo walks out furiously, not wanting to believe what she'd just heard. She walks back into the classroom, taking her seat.

Mr. Jerome- Jo, you're late.
Jo- Yeah, I got called to the office.

The bell rings and she walks out with Jesse, Lisa and Karen.

That's all I'm gonna post for now. This is just to give you guys a little bit of a guideline, which'll help me know if ya like it or not. I'll post more later on if I get some replies

Aww thanks you guys! Would have posted more but I was working on something for my BFF Lisa, who's actually a character in the story!
Anyways, here's more:

They all head down the hall towards Mr. Collins classroom for Algebra.

Lisa- Ugh, I hate algebra!
Karen- Well, you used to have a crush on Mr. Collins so...
Lisa- Hey! That was last year, Kar.
Jesse- Yeah, but ya drooled over him at every glance ya got! *Laughs*
Jo- *Grins*
Lisa- Oi, is this Pick-On-Lisa Day and nobody told me?
Karen- Yeah, national holiday.
Jesse- *Rolls her eyes* Oh, ya know we love ya, Lis.
Lisa- You guys got a funny way of showin' it.!
Jo- *Laughs a little*

Mr. Collins is waiting outside the door when they come walking down the hall. He smiles at them widely.

Jesse- Whattaya starin' at us for?
Karen- Oops... I think I know why...
Lisa- Karen, tell me ya didn't set your watch for the wrong time again.
Karen- If I tell you that, do ya promise not to hurt me?
Jo- *Rubs her forehead* Kar...
Karen- Sorry!
Mr. Collins- *Laughs* It's okay. As long as you guys get in there within the next 2 minutes, I won't give you detention.

The girls walk into his classroom relieved. They take their seats and Mr. Collins walks in, takes role and sits at his desk.

Mr. Collins- Everybody got their stuff done?

The class is silent.

Mr. Collins- Ugh, I don't know what I'm gonna do with you guys! Maybe if I make you write the assignments on your hand you'll remember. Or maybe on a post-it stuck to your shirts. *Grins*

A numerous amount of laughter fills the room.

Mr. Collins starts to teach and after awhile the bell rings.

Mr. Collins- *Looks up from his papers* Is it just me or did the bell ring WAY too early...?

Mr. Morris over PA System- All students and teachers report to the auditorium at this time.

They all file out and go into the auditorium. The teachers sit up front while the students are in the very back. The principle informs them that there's been a chemical spill in the Chemistry lab and that they have to stay in the auditorium until it's cleaned up. After many hours, it seems, they're allowed to get their stuff and go home. They would have probably continued classes, except for the fact it was 7 by time everything had been cleaned up. Since they're in the very last row in back, Jo, Jesse, Lisa & Karen walk out first. They're about to walk home together until Jo remembers she'd left her History book in Mr. Jerome's room. Figuring he wouldn't be there at this hour, she walks into the classroom, kneels down and gets the book from the bottom of her seat. Mr. Jerome just watches her from a corner of the room. Just as she's about to leave he speaks up.

Mr. Jerome- Have a good day in school?
Jo- *Still a little uncomfortable around him* Uh, yeah. No more than usual, I guess.
Mr. Jerome- That's good.

He keeps walking up closer behind her as she's leaving until he's close as he needs to be. When she's walking out the door, he covers her mouth with his hand and pulls her back inside the classroom, slamming the door and turning off the lights.

Hey, I gotta reboot, but I'll type more up when I get back. I don't wanna lose everything I've typed just b/c my comp. decided it wanted to freeze!

Okay, I just woke up, but I'm ready to post more. And people seem to like it so far, which also helps, LOL.
So, here's more:

He pushes her up against the wall which such force that she doesn't even get a chance to move or struggle to get away. He pins her hands firmly to the wall and starts to kiss her neck. She moves around a little in a desperate attempt to get him to stop. He's not too thrilled with this and tells her so.

Mr. Jerome- Jo, if I were you, I'd stand still. No telling what could happen if you don't.

Of course, being the stubbourn person she is, she again tries to escape, but when he takes out a knife and runs it lightly across her throat, she instantly stops.

Mr. Jerome- *Grins* That's better. You're not going anywhere.
Jo- Ya make me sick.
Mr. Jerome- Really? Do I now? *Slaps her across the face* Now, maybe you'll think twice about mouthing off to me.

Jo doesn't say anything, but turns her head when he tries to kiss her on the cheek. Mr. Jerome, on the other hand, goes down to her waist area and unzips her jeans. When he does this, Jo knees him in the stomach, causing him to fall backwards onto the floor. She goes to run out the door, but Mr. Jerome again pulls her back inside, this time throwing her to the floor. He pins her down, covers her mouth and rapes her.

***20 minutes later***
Mr. Jerome- *Grins, getting off her* There, now that wasn't so bad, was it?

Jo's silent and with a tear-stained face and ripped covershirt, she buttons her jeans back up, leaving as quickly as possible without her History book. Not really thinking straight at this point, she goes to Jesse's apartment instead of her own. When she gets there, she knocks on the door quietly. Jesse's voice from inside tells her to wait a minute and when Jesse finally comes to answer the door, what she saw, she couldn't believe.

Jesse- Oh my god, Jo. What happened to ya? *Looks at her ripped covershirt* Get in here and sit down.

Jo goes in and Jesse shuts the door. Jo sits on the couch and Jesse sits on a chair across from her.

Jesse- Alright, spill it. What happened?
Jo- Nothin'.

Since she says this in a quiet tone of voice, which Jo did seldomly, Jesse knew she was lying.

Jesse- Jo, c'mon. I've known ya for years and I know you're lyin' to me.
Jo- *Sighs* I was raped, Jess.
Jesse- You? By who?

Jesse finds this a little hard to believe considering these things didn't happen too often to Jo.

Jo- Mr. Jerome.
Jesse- WHAT? God, I thought those were just rumors!
Jo- Yeah, well they ain't.
Jesse- Ya needa tell somebody.
Jo- *Wry chuckle* Yeah, well ya know what, Jess? I tried that earlia' and honestly I dunno why I even bothered.
Jesse- *Sighs* Well, ya not goin' home tonight.
Jo- What?
Jesse- You're stayin' here with me.
Jo- Not like I got a choice.
Jesse- *Grins, trying to cheer her up* Ya got that right.

They go to bed and in the middle of the night Jo wakes up. She didn't have that much trouble getting to sleep, but in the hours of the night she kept reliving the rape over and over again, like some kind of nightmare.

***Next Morning***
Jo and Jesse wake up an hour early because Jesse's alarm rings an hour early and wakes them both up.

Jo- *Groans, yelling into the next room* Jess! I thought ya were gettin' that thing fixed!
Jesse- Eh, don't remind me!
Jo- Get it fixed or die, Jess!
Jesse- *Rolls her eyes* Fiiiine. *Gets up and turns off the alarm*

Jo and her start getting ready for school. Since they wear the same size, Jo just borrows something of Jesse's, which in truth, could have started out Jo's anyway.

Jesse- *Pulls a black cutoff shirt over her head* Find anything ya like?
Jo- *Gives her a look, holding up a red checkered covershirt and spandex black top* Yeah. *Grins*
Jesse- *Nervous laugh* Heh, heh, well would ya look at that!
Jo- *Rolls her eyes* I'm takin' back my clothes, Jess. *Puts on the black shirt and covershirt*
Jesse- Yeah, well, they're yours.
Jo- Exactly. When did I lend 'em out to ya?
Jesse- *Shrugs, making her bed*

Jo makes up the bed she slept in and looks at the clock, then to Jesse.

Jesse- *Sees her staring at her* I swear, that's all the clothing I stole from ya.
Jo- First of all, I doubt that. Secondly, I wonder if Ma's up yet.
Jesse- *Shrugs* She got crazy hours.
Jo- Tell me 'bout it. Well, I gotta get my stuff from the apartment anyway. Meet me there. *Leaves before Jesse can say anything*

She goes to her apartment and by the time she gets everything she needs from her room, it's a quarter til 7 and Jesse's loud knocks on the door startle her.

Jesse- Tell me somethin'. How is it ya always manage to be late for everything?!
Jo- It's a gift. *Tries to open the door, but it won't open* Not again...
Jesse- What? Open the door.
Jo- I can't, Mr. Valducci fixed it.
Jesse- Gonna be here til Tuesday...
Jo- I'll pull, you push.

They manage to get the door open by that method, but when they do, it falls off its hinges.

Jo- *Sarcasm* Oh, that's nice.
Jesse- *Laughs*
Jo- That ain't good...

They manage to get the door back on and of course, are late for class. They run in and get to the door just as Mr. Jerome stands there.

Mr. Jerome- You're late.
Jesse- No kiddin'.
Jo- *Silent*
Mr. Jerome- Get to your seats.

They go in and sit down. The rest of the class is copying notes off the board, so they get out their notebooks and do the same. Jo keeps trying to focus on her work, but she keeps feeling like Mr. Jerome's constantly watching her. Which, in truth he was. This made her feel more uncomfortable then ever so she's just relieved when the bell rings for boys P.E. Hoping Mr. Jerome would just stay at his desk after the girls were done on break. Not knowing what would happen, Lisa stays in the classroom with Mr. Jerome, not knowing what's going on. He grins to her and walks over.

Mr. Jerome- Hello, Lisa.
Lisa- Oh! Mr. Jerome, you scared me.
Mr. Jerome- I'm sorry. *Strokes her hair lightly*
Lisa- Mr. Jerome, I don't--
Mr. Jerome- Oh, Lisa. You know, you are a very beautiful girl. *Looks down at her chest area* Who's turning into a gorgeous and sexy young woman. *Grins*
Lisa- *Bites her lower lip* I think I hear Jo callin' me... *Leaves the room*
Mr. Jerome- *Grins and thinks to himself "She's next"* *Walks out of the classroom*

OK, Lisa, I know you're DYING to know what happens to 'you' ( LOL ) next, so here's more:

Lisa walks out quickly and find Jo standing by the water fountain waiting for Jesse and Karen to come out of the girl's bathroom. She runs over on the edge of tears, hoping nobody would notice.

Lisa- Jo, he, he...
Jo- He who? Lis, what's wrong?
Lisa- Mr. Jerome. I tried to stop him, but I didn't think he meant anything by it.
Jo- Wait a minute, slow down. Take a deep breath and try to calmly tell me what happened.
Lisa- *Takes a deep breath*
Jo- Yeah, like that. Now, what's goin' on?
Lisa- Mr. Jerome... did something to me. He stroked my hair affectionately and just told me some things.
Jo- Like what?
Lisa- That I was pretty and then he looked down at my chest and said stuff like I'm turning into a sexy young woman.
Jo- *Sighs* What'd he say after that?
Lisa- Nothing. Well, I left as fast as I could. *A tear rolls down her cheek* The rumors are true, Jo. I didn't like him doing that to me. I don't think I can handle it if he does it again. *Continues to sob quietly into her hand*
Jo- *Comforts her as best as she can*

The bell rings and they go back to class. The rest of the day is pretty much the same as it always is and when its time to leave, the office informs Jo she has detention until 7 that night for being late for class. Normally, dentetion hours weren't that long, but they grouped together the couple other times she'd been late, so she stays at school. Jesse, Lisa and Karen walk home without her.

Karen- Some new guy who's supposed to be coming to our school ya know.
Jesse- *Laughs* How do ya know all this?
Karen- I have my ways... *Grins*
Jesse- Snoopin' through otha people's stuff don't count.
Lisa- Well, did ya get a name?
Karen- Edward.
Lisa- EDWARD?
They all start laughing and the guys notice.

Carson- Lord, here they come.
Tommy- *Grins*
Scott- And Jesse is lookin' fiiiiiine today, yeow!
Carson- Get over it, she's never gunna go out with ya!
Tommy- Remember what happened last time he tried to ask Jesse out?

The girls walks up to them just as he says that.

Jesse- Yeah, I broke his thumb. *Grins*
Carson- Ah, ladies. To what do we owe the pleasure of this intrusion?
Tommy- And how long's it gunna last?
Jesse- Can it, Shore.
Scott- Hey, where's Jo?
Lisa- Detention.
Carson- That girl's always in trouble. *Sighs*
Karen- Why do ya think we all get along so well?
Lisa- We gotta get goin'.
Carson- Oh yeah? Got any plans?
Jesse- Yep.
Carson- Givin' your bike a lube job don't count, Jess.
Jesse- *Glares*
Karen- Yes we do have plans. Unlike you 3, we're goin' to the Springfield concert.

They leave and no sooner do they walk off in the opposite direction, a boy about Carson's age runs up to him, Tommy and Scott.

Eddie- Hey guys, sorry I'm late.
Carson- No big deal.
Tommy- Yeah, not like we're busy or anything.
Eddie- Heh, yeah.

***Next Morning***
Jesse wakes up, gets dressed and goes over to Jo's. Knowing she'd still be asleep, she knocks as loud as she can on the door.

Jo- *Groans* Jess! Ugh, not so loud!
Jesse- Get up, get dressed and deal with it, Polniaczek.

Jo gets up, pulls on a pair of jeans with holes in the knees and a black t-shirt. She grabs her keys and walks out the door.

***School***
