Vcr Brand - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

My tv doesn`t have in put jacks, I have my dvd running through vcr. Some brands of vcr`s you can`t hook them up like that.

I don`t want to record, my vcr is Sony, is their another brand vcr you can use?

Im not exactly sure what you're saying. If you have to hook you dvd player up through the vcr because the tv does not have color coded rca jacks, then you just need any vcr with color coded jacks, right? Any vcr you buy these days will have those on the back. You might be thinking of the hookup in terms of others talking about recording from a dvd to a vcr. No matter how how you hook them up, you wont defeat macrovision copy protection unless your vcr / dvd is old or is modified to ignore those signals.

could that be what you're thinking?

Someone told me, on some brands of vcr`s the macrovision copy protection will keep you from even playing a dvd through your vcr.

I don`t care about recording, just playing.

ok, got it! yes, if you play a dvd through the vcr and the dvd is macrovision protected, the color will jump around a bit. it is no longer possible to buy new vcrs that dont recognize macrovision - they all do. You can purchase a dvd player that can be modified to ignore macrovision by upgrading it with a "hack disc" downloaded from the internet. A popular model was the apex ad-1500. I believe it has been replaced by the apex 5131 (available at walmart and just about everywhere)

Another option is the sima copymaster which can be purchased at amazon.com or best buy. Ive never used one and have heard conflicting reports about how well it works. I dont even know for sure how it hooks up. It's a picture stabilizer, whuch is their fancy legal way of saying, "helps get rid of that macrovision problem."

The only other thing i can think of is swapping your cables everytime you want to switch from watching your vcr to watching your dvd player. A big pain, but the cheapest solution, i guess.

im not 100% sure about this, because ive never had one, but my brother did. since he movied out, i cant check it but it might be called a "switchbox" something like this

you might run in to somewhere like radio shack or any electronics store and take a look at some, if there are any in stock. i think you can just slide between device A (vcr) and device B (dvd player). This would be a lot easier than anything else.
my brother used one because he has an zbox, ps2, and gamecube on top of the vcr, and dvd player. Im thinking this is the best option, as long as you find one that doesnt hook up to the tv with av cables, of course.
