Question Lemons....

ok Why do they do that to lemons? I never got that! they always do the same thing: They cut of the two ends and then they flip it over and start cutting the inside of it out.....why? do they make a drink that requires lemon halves..... and if so it must be a POPULAR drink, because they are ALWAYS doing that. It's probably just making them look busy behind the bar...but I don't get it...lol

yes but they cut the skin off. Like when lemons are used the skin is still on them, people just simply cut them into halves. But all the bartenders at Cheers didn't do that, they sliced off each of the edges and cut the inside out to it out and then threw away the skin....

Are you sure they threw away the skin? I used to be a bartender, and many drinks used a lemon twist as opposed to a slice of lemon (or lemon wedge).
We would have to cut the inside of the lemon out and cut the skins into strips. After the drink was made, I'd rub the lemon twist around the rim of the glass, then let it float in the drink.
Same thing for limes.

You're welcome. That whole lemon/lime thing was used as a prop really--so they could be doing something as they were talking or to look busy in the background of the scene. It was that or drying glasses.
You are right about them using a LOT of lemons though. I've noticed that myself. Twists are used in martini type drinks. People order a martini with a twist in place of an olive. Other drinks that use twists are Manhattans, Brandy cocktails--lots of whiskey, brandy and bourbon based drinks that are served in those martini glasses.
For a pub that serves a lot of beer, there were quite a bit of twists being prepared at Cheers.
I noticed many martinis being served in Cheers, but they always got olives from what I could see.
I'll shut up now. You can file this one under, 'More information than you care to know', lol.

Damn Janice. Your gone for months and you come back with an essay on alchoholic beverages.............NICE! haha. Remember when Cheers first started to air, and they would have plugs of like George and John sittin on a stool. Kelsey was talking about "A guy walks into a bar" jokes. And Woody did the lemon thing. "It's like riding a bicycle". haha. Those were cool.

Ya know, I've seen bartenders cut a lot of lemons. thousands of lemons, and I have never actually seen one being used.

Next time I'm out, I'll ask.

NORM, those were great.
I loved the ones where Norm and Cliff were sitting next to eachother, but then they had to switch seats because they didn't recognize that certain side of their face.
