It doesn't seem like The Golden Girls will be out on DVD this year... I think that article mis-led everyone into a big frenzy over nothing. TGG is getting too big of ratings on Lifetime to be put out on DVD just yet.

That sucks. I don't think putting the show on DVD will affect ratings though. Friends has 4 seasons of episodes on DVD, plus countless greatest of DVDs and the ratings are still sky high both in syndication and on primetime.

I think, and this is just my opinion, that putting GG on DVD's would affect the ratings.
The Friends cast makes those high salaries (can't wait until the series goes of the air, and we don't have to hear about them), and that's why I think they went to DVD's, while the series is still on the air. |

I used to like Friends in seasons 2 and 3, but now I do not like that show. Ross & Rachel, and their on again/off again relationship, turned me of the show.

Well, this is good and bad news to me;
1. I didn't even know the DVD was confirmed; cool. 2. It's delayed; D'oh! |

I agree, The reason why GG is not on DVD is that it is an old show, still popular, but if it went to DVD Lifetime's ratings would definately be affected.

I am surprised that the Designing Women DVD already has a release date and yet GG is put on hold...

But isn't the Designing Women DVD just a few episodes and not an actual season? On that note, is the GG DVD gonna be a season or just a few episodes?

Yeah, I'd rather have Season sets, too. I'd only buy "Best of...'s" if they're, like 5 bucks.

Most fans who like these shows are not the type to spend mucho bucks on DVDs period. Some don't even own a DVD player. I speak of middle-aged women and men who are not as caught up in pop culture and therefore don't acribe to the trend of the day. It's different with a show like FRIENDS, since that show is still current. There are tons of teenagers who are into that show and, either through their own allowance or through their parents, will invest in DVD sets as well as other merchandise. It's also a show that's mainstream. DESIGNING WOMEN is not. Most of the show's fanbase are women who are much older than the teen crowd. Like it or not that's a reality. Me, I'm 30 and am male. I have bought the 'best-of' release and would invest in season sets, and I'm sure I'm not the only one on this board who fits that description, but face it, we're the exception, not the rule. THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW is just as popular and has just as loyal a fanbase, but future releases of the show have been halted because Season 1 didn't sell well. And there was a MARY & RHODA reunion that was broadcast that topped the ratings, but the show's fanbase is not part of the DVD buying crowd. Naturally, I hope the same fate doesn't befall DESIGNING WOMEN, but it might not even get that far if sales are crappy for this release. Think about it... Ed |

That's funny because I thought that there was a big college following of The Golden Girls, I also assumed that kids that watched the show when it first aired (and I was one of them) who are now older would also buy a DVD of the show. I am 21 and know plenty of people between my age and 40 who are looking forward to a release and who do own a DVD player.
But I do agree that the Best Of is a test, we should buy in droves and that just may convince them of its selling power as a season set. As far as Mary is concerned. Season one wasn't the best season of the show and I am willing to bet most people were holding out for later seasons, not realising that poor sales would result in a halt to production of further releases. |
