Raven (no longer Raven-Symone) grew up in front of the cameras. She made her television debut at the tender age of three as Olivia Kendall on the hit series "The Cosby Show". Her career has been unstoppable ever since. Raven is the star of Disney Channel's top-rated show "That's so Raven". Raven isn't just an actress, she's a recording artist with two CDs under her belt. Bloommag.com had a chance to meet up with Raven to learn what makes her so unstoppable…
In your show "That's so Raven" you have psychic powers with the ability to foresee flashes of the future. What are some other powers you wish you had? Raven: I would love to be an alchemist. I would love to have the power to turn things into Gold. That would be on point! (laughing) I would then sell the items to get money. I definitely wouldn't want the power to know what everyone was thinking. I would have a nervous breakdown because I would want to try and please everyone. How do you balance work, school and family? Raven: People have a tendency to think that it's difficult juggling work, school and family but it's really not because I make time for my family. I work on the set from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and I then go home. I'm home schooled so my classes take place while I'm on the set. My Dad is at the studio with me, and my Mom comes during the afternoons. My family spends the weekends together The critics have stated that your comedic talents on "That's so Raven" are reminiscent of Lucille Ball. Where does your comedic timing come from? Raven: I've been doing comedy since I was three years old, as Olivia on "The Cosby Show". I learned from Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, and Mark Curry. I also love watching sitcoms on television. I love watching Lucille Ball and all the great comedic actresses. So, I think it's me absorbing everything that I like to watch and the people I've worked with. Who has been your greatest inspiration? Raven: My parents! The people that I've worked with have been a great inspiration to me too. I've learned what they had to go through to get where they are. They all gave me a chance by letting me be a part of their show. Janet Jackson has been a HUGE inspiration. She's a wonderful entertainer and definitely an icon. I would like to model my professional career after hers. If you were not in the entertainment business, what do you see yourself doing? Raven: It would definitely be doing something in the entertainment business, like working behind the scenes. I also love to paint and cook. Even though I'm in the entertainment business, I would love to open my own restaurant. I also want to attend culinary school and become a pastry chef. What's the best thing about being in show business? What's the worst thing? Raven: There are so many great things about being in the business. One thing is that you get a lot of FREE stuff (laughing). I get free makeup and clothes. Another plus is that I have a chance to meet a lot of famous people. I'm always star struck when I see them. I'll run up to them and say, can I get your autograph or can I take your picture. The last person I was star struck by was Kirstie Alley from Cheers. I met her at the Lizzie McGuire movie premiere. The worst thing about being in the business is the fake people that you encounter. I'm from Atlanta and when I moved to LA, I was shocked to meet so many fake people. Who are you pumping in your car these days? Raven: LITTLE KIM! The Jump Off. LaBella Mafia. That is the girl (laughing). And for those that can't get that album, Vanessa Carlton. I love all types of music. I love hard core rap to Metallica. My Mom thinks I'm crazy. She always wonders how I can go from Little Kim to Vanessa Carlton. I also love Bjork. I love to listen to all types of music. What are some important lessons you've learned since being in the business. Raven: To remain honest, focused, and to be very professional. If you work with me you'll know that there's a time for play and a time for work. This is a job for me. This is equivalent to a 9 to 5 job. How do you treat yourself after a long hard day? Raven: After a long day on the set, I go to sleep. Or I'll go to the MAC cosmetics store and buy some makeup. What do you enjoy more acting or singing? Raven: I've been doing both for sometime. And both are very dear to me. I really enjoy acting and singing a lot, so I'm mixing the two of them together at this point. I just finished shooting a movie called "The Cheetah Girls" for Disney. It's Disney's first musical that they've created as an original movie. The movie comes out this August. It gave me the opportunity to mix both acting and singing. The movie also stars Adrienne Bailon and Kiely Williams from 3LW as well as Sabrina Bryant. What's next for Raven? Raven: Definitely CD's and more movies. As far as "That's so Raven", more physical comedy with a lot more stunts for Raven. The producers and directors learned that I was up for anything, so this year they are serving it. I'm also getting prepared for college. I'm looking at the Culinary Institute of America and UCLA. |

She sounds very serious about her acting and her singing. I like that kind of actor/actress. I am disappointed in actors/actresses that are only in the entertainment business for the free stuff. You'd be surprised how many of those there are if you really look around. I admire what Raven is doing and how she goes about doing it.
