Boy Named Sue
(Shel Silverstein) My daddy left home when I was three, And he didn't leave much to Ma and me... Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze. Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid, But the meanest thing that he ever did Was before he left, he went and named me 'Sue'. Well, he must o' thought that is was quite a joke, And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk. It seems I had to fight my whole life through. Some gal would giggle and I'd get red, And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head. I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named 'Sue'. Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean, My fist got hard and my wits got keen. I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame. But I made me a vow to the moon and stars That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars, And kill that man that give me that awful name. Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July And I just hit town, and my throat was dry. I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew. At an old saloon on a street of mud, There at a table, dealing stud, Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me 'Sue'. Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had, And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye. He was big and bent and gray and old, And I looked at him and my blood ran cold, And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' How do you do! Now you gonna die!" Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes, And he went down, but, to my surprise, He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear. But I busted a chair right across his teeth And we crashed through the wall and into the street Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer. I tell ya, I've fought tougher men, But I really can't remember when, He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile. I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss, He went for his gun and I pulled mine first, He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile. And he said: "Son, this world is rough, And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough, And I know I wouldn't be there to help ya along. So I give ya that name and I said good-bye. I knew you'd have to get tough or die, And it's that name that helped to make you strong." He said: "Now you just fought one hell of a fight, And I know you hate me, and you got the right To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do. But ya ought to thank me, before I die, For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you 'Sue'." I got all choked up and I threw down my gun And I called him my pa, and he called me his son, And I come away with a different point of view. And I think about him, now and then, Every time I try and every time I win, And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him Bill or George! Anything but sue! I still hate that name! |

"All Along the Watchtower"
by Bob Dylan "There must be some way out of here'', said the joker to the thief "There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief Businessmen they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth None of them along the line know what any of it is worth.'' "No reason to get excited'', the thief he kindly spoke "There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke But you and I we've been thru that, and this is not our fate So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late.'' All along the watchtower, princes kept the view While all the women came and went, barefoot servants too Outside in the distance a wild cat did growl Two riders where approaching, the wind began to howl. |

"Penny And Me"
written by Zac, Taylor And Isaac Hanson (I love this song!)Cigars in the summertime and the sky by the light I can feel her reading my mind I can see it in her eyes under the moonlight someplace Music every night There's a rope beaten by every fan in the room Passions burning hot by the shades Let's get in under the light It's always Penny and me tonight Hop on a plane, said you can come with me Drive the scene along the way We'll ride to NYC Got my beans in a coffee cup next to my seat Catch the literary with another book to read Send me home on the friendly skies Missing her eyes It's always Penny and me tonight Cause Penny and me like to roll the windows down Turn the radio up Push the pedal to the ground And Penny and me like to gaze at starry skies Close our eyes pretend to fly It's always Penny and me tonight Some night under the city lights And it's just Penny and I all alone beneath the sky Though the wind brushes slowly by If I could only try I'd spread these wings and fly Would you wear the legion red And no matter where I am instead Singing alone she's feeling alright We'll get by in the faint moonlight It's always Penny and me tonight Cause Penny and me like to roll the windows down Turn the radio up Push the pedal to the ground And Penny and me like to gaze at starry skies Close our eyes pretend to fly close our eyes pretend to fly It's always Penny and me tonight Penny and I should get away and drown our pain in lemonade Penny dreams of rainy days and nights up late by the fireplace And aimless conversations about the better days Singing alone she's feeling alright You'll get by in the faint moonlight It's always Penny and me tonight Cause Penny and me like to roll the windows down Turn the radio up Push the pedal to the ground And Penny and me like to gaze at starry skies Close our eyes pretend to fly close our eyes pretend to fly It's always Penny and me tonight Penny and me tonight Penny and me tonight Penny and me tonight |

Surf's Up
(Wilson/Parks) The diamond necklace played the pawn Hand in hand some drummed along, oh To a handsome man and baton A blind class aristocracy Back through the opera glass you see The pit and the pendulum drawn Columniated ruins domino Canvass the town and brush the backdrop Are you sleeping? Hung velvet overtaken me Dim chandelier awaken me To a song dissolved in the dawn The music hall a costly bow The music all is lost for now To a muted trumpeter swan Calumniated ruins domino Canvass the town and brush the backdrop Are you sleeping, Brother John? Dove nested towers the hour was Strike the street quicksilver moon Carriage across the fog Two-Step to lamp lights cellar tune The laughs come hard in Auld Lang Syne The glass was raised, the fired rose The fullness of the wine, the dim last toasting While at port adieu or die A choke of grief heart hardened I Beyond belief a broken man too tough to cry Surf's Up Aboard a tidal wave Come about hard and join The young and often spring you gave I heard the word Wonderful thing A children's song Child, child, child, child, child A child is the father of the man Child, child, child, child, child A child is the father of the man A children's song Have you listened as they played Their song is love And the children know the way That's why the child is the father to the man Child, child, child, child, child Child, child, child, child, child Na na na na na na na na Child, child, child, child, child That's why the child is the father to the man Child, child, child, child, child |

Take Me Home, Country Roads (Denver/ Danoff/Danoff)
Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River. Life is old there, older than the trees, younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads. All my memories gather round her, miner's lady, stranger to blue water. Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads. I hear her voice in the morning hour she calls me, the radio reminds me of my home far away. And driving down the road I get a feeling that I should have been home yesterday, yesterday. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads. |

Let It Bleed
(Jagger/Richards) Well we all need someone to lean on And if you want it, well you can lean on me Well, we all need someone we can lean on And if you want it, well you can lean on me She said ’my breasts they will always be open Baby, you can rest your weary head on me And there will always be a space in my parking lot When you need a little coke and sympathy’ Yeah, we all need someone we can dream on And if you want it, well you can dream on me Yeah, we all need someone we can cream on And if you want to, well you can cream on me I was dreaming of a steel guitar engagement When you drink my health in scented jasmine tea You knifed me in my dirty filthy basement With that jaded faded junky nurse Oh, what pleasant company We all need someone we can feed on And if you want it, well you can feed on me Take my arm, take my leg Oh, baby, don’t you take my head We all need someone we can bleed on And if you want it, baby, well you can bleed on me We all need someone we can bleed on And if you want it, why don’t you bleed on me Get it on, rider Get it on, rider Get it on, rider You can bleed all over me. |

Jug Band Music
by John Sebastian (The Lovin' Spoonful) I was down in Savannah, eatin' cream and bananas When the heat just made me faint I began to get cross-eyed, I thought I was lost, I'd Begun to see things as they ain't As the relatives gathered to see what's the matter The doctor came to see was I dyin' But the doctor said, "Give him jug band music It seems to make him feel just fine" I was told a little tale about a skinny-as-a-rail Eight-foot cowboy with a headache He was hung up in the desert swattin' rats and tryin' to get A drink of water with his knees a-gettin' mud-caked And I'll tell you in a sentence how he stumbled in to Memphis, Tennessee, hardly crawlin', lookin' dust-baked We gave him a little water, a little bit of wine He opened up his eyes, but they didn't seem to shine Then the doctor said, "Give him jug band music It seems to make him feel just fine" So if you ever get sickly, get Sis to run quickly To the dusty closet shelf And pull out a washboard, and play a guitar chord And do a little do-it-yourself And call on your neighbors to put down their labors And come and play the hardware in time 'Cause the doctor said, "Give him jug band music It seems to make him feel just fine" I was floatin' in the ocean greased with suntan lotion When I got wiped out by a beach boy He was surfin' when he hit me but jumped off his board to get me And he dragged me by the armpit like a child's toy As we staggered into land with all the waiters eatin' sandwiches He tried to mooch a towel from the hoi polloi He emptied out his eardrums, I emptied out mine And everybody knows that the very last line Is "the doctor said, 'Give him jug band music It seems to make him feel just fine'" 1965 The Lovin´Spoonful "Daydream" Kama Sutra Records |

Positively 4th Street by: Bob Dylan
You got a lotta nerve To say you are my friend When I was down You just stood there grinning You got a lotta nerve To say you got a helping hand to lend You just want to be on The side that's winning You say I let you down You know it's not like that If you're so hurt Why then don't you show it You say you lost your faith But that's not where it's at You had no faith to lose And you know it I know the reason That you talk behind my back I used to be among the crowd You're in with Do you take me for such a fool To think I'd make contact With the one who tries to hide What he don't know to begin with You see me on the street You always act surprised You say, "How are you?" "Good luck" But you don't mean it When you know as well as me You'd rather see me paralyzed Why don't you just come out once And scream it No, I do not feel that good When I see the heartbreaks you embrace If I was a master thief Perhaps I'd rob them And now I know you're dissatisfied With your position and your place Don't you understand It's not my problem I wish that for just one time You could stand inside my shoes And just for that one moment I could be you Yes, I wish that for just one time You could stand inside my shoes You'd know what a drag it is To see you |

My Back Pages
by Bob Dylan Crimson flames tied through my ears, throwing high and mighty traps Countless fire and flaming road, using ideas as my maps. "We'll meet on edges, soon," said I, proud ?neath heated brow. Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now. Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth, "Rip down all hate," I screamed. Lies that life is black and white spoke from my skull, I dreamed. Romantic flanks of musketeers, foundation deep, somehow. Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now. In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand at the mongrel dogs who teach, fearing not I'd become my enemy in the instant that I preach. My pathway led by confusion boats, mutiny from stern to bow. Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now. My guard stood hard when abstract threats, too noble to neglect, deceived me into thinking I had something to protect. Good and bad, I define these terms, quite clear, no doubt, somehow. Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now. |

Tangled Up In Blue
(Dylan) Early one mornin' the sun was shinin', I was layin' in bed Wond'rin' if she'd changed at all If her hair was still red. Her folks they said our lives together Sure was gonna be rough They never did like Mama's homemade dress Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough. And I was standin' on the side of the road Rain fallin' on my shoes Heading out for the East Coast Lord knows I've paid some dues gettin' through, Tangled up in blue. She was married when we first met Soon to be divorced I helped her out of a jam, I guess, But I used a little too much force. We drove that car as far as we could Abandoned it out West Split up on a dark sad night Both agreeing it was best. She turned around to look at me As I was walkin' away I heard her say over my shoulder, "We'll meet again someday on the avenue," Tangled up in blue. I had a job in the great north woods Working as a cook for a spell But I never did like it all that much And one day the ax just fell. So I drifted down to New Orleans Where I happened to be employed Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat Right outside of Delacroix. But all the while I was alone The past was close behind, I seen a lot of women But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew Tangled up in blue. She was workin' in a topless place And I stopped in for a beer, I just kept lookin' at the side of her face In the spotlight so clear. And later on as the crowd thinned out I's just about to do the same, She was standing there in back of my chair Said to me, "Don't I know your name?" I muttered somethin' underneath my breath, She studied the lines on my face. I must admit I felt a little uneasy When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe, Tangled up in blue. She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe "I thought you'd never say hello," she said "You look like the silent type." Then she opened up a book of poems And handed it to me Written by an Italian poet From the thirteenth century. And every one of them words rang true And glowed like burnin' coal Pourin' off of every page Like it was written in my soul from me to you, Tangled up in blue. I lived with them on Montague Street In a basement down the stairs, There was music in the cafes at night And revolution in the air. Then he started into dealing with slaves And something inside of him died. She had to sell everything she owned And froze up inside. And when finally the bottom fell out I became withdrawn, The only thing I knew how to do Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew, Tangled up in blue. So now I'm goin' back again, I got to get to her somehow. All the people we used to know They're an illusion to me now. Some are mathematicians Some are carpenter's wives. Don't know how it all got started, I don't know what they're doin' with their lives. But me, I'm still on the road Headin' for another joint We always did feel the same, We just saw it from a different point of view, Tangled up in blue. |

Things Have Changed
(Dylan) A worried man with a worried mind No one in front of me and nothing behind There's a woman on my lap and she's drinking champagne Got white skin, got assassin's eyes I'm looking up into the sapphire-tinted skies I'm well dressed, waiting on the last train Standing on the gallows with my head in a noose Any minute now I'm expecting all hell to break loose People are crazy and times are strange I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range I used to care, but things have changed This place ain't doing me any good I'm in the wrong town, I should be in Hollywood Just for a second there I thought I saw something move Gonna take dancing lessons do the jitterbug rag Ain't no shortcuts, gonna dress in drag Only a fool in here would think he's got anything to prove Lot of water under the bridge, Lot of other stuff too Don't get up gentlemen, I'm only passing through People are crazy and times are strange I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range I used to care, but things have changed I've been walking forty miles of bad road If the bible is right, the world will explode I've been trying to get as far away from myself as I can Some things are too hot to touch The human mind can only stand so much You can't win with a losing hand Feel like falling in love with the first woman I meet Putting her in a wheel barrow and wheeling her down the street People are crazy and times are strange I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range I used to care, but things have changed I hurt easy, I just don't show it You can hurt someone and not even know it The next sixty seconds could be like an eternity Gonna get low down, gonna fly high All the truth in the world adds up to one big lie I'm in love with a woman who don't even appeal to me Mr. Jinx and Miss Lucy, they jumped in the lake I'm not that eager to make a mistake People are crazy and times are strange I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range I used to care, but things have changed Won Best Original Song, 2001, for the film "Wonder Boys" at the 73rd Annual Academy Awards |

Pinball Wizard
(The Who) Ever since I was a young boy, I've played the silver ball. >From Soho down to Brighton I must have played them all. But I ain't seen nothing like him In any amusement hall... That deaf dumb and blind kid Sure plays a mean pin ball ! He stands like a statue, Becomes part of the machine. Feeling all the bumpers Always playing clean. He plays by intuition, The digit counters fall. That deaf dumb and blind kid Sure plays a mean pin ball ! He's a pin ball wizard There has got to be a twist. A pin ball wizard, S'got such a supple wrist. 'How do you think he does it? I don't know! What makes him so good?' He ain't got no distractions Can't hear those buzzers and bells, Don't see lights a flashin' Plays by sense of smell. Always has a replay, 'n' never tilts at all... That deaf dumb and blind kid Sure plays a mean pin ball. I thought I was The Bally table king. But I just handed My pin ball crown to him. Even my usual table He can beat my best. His disciples lead him in And he just does the rest. He's got crazy flipper fingers Never seen him fall... That deaf dumb and blind kind Sure plays a mean pin ball.!!!!! |
