Wink About those shoes...

Well, I figured why should Sitcom Analyzer (the artist formally known as SOLOMON) ask all of the questions about men and woman?
Here is a good one.

My roomie is having a bit of trouble with his girlfriend. They are technically "on hiatus" to borrow one of my phrases because they have had some troubles lately.

One of the things he has a problem with is she is very critical of the way he dresses.
My bud isn't the worst dresser in the world, I mean, he knows not to mix stripes and plaids, but he's a fairly conservative banker guy, and when he's not wearing a suit, his idea of dressing down is Doc Martens and buttondown shirt. His gal has been suggesting things to buy, but he thinks she is trying to mold him into her version of the "ideal boyfriend" rather than accepting him for what he is. I tend to agree with him, since she is very high maintanance and really likes things a certain way.
My roomie is not totally inflexible. He has bought another pair of shoes and is looking into some new duds for his nights out, but he still believes she is trying to control him.

So what do you think? Is it fair to knock your significant other's clothing of choice, or should you let things be?

BTW, to clarify, I don't own any Doc Martens.

Tell your roommate to tell his GF to JUST KNOCK IT OFF!!!!!!! He will dress the way HE wants to if it is what he feels most comfy in. I don't see any problem here. Just as long as he keeps himself and his clothes clean and his clothes are in great shape (no holes, rips, etc), I don't see anything wrong with the way your roommate dresses. His GF has no right to tell him how to dress. If she has a problem with that, he should just dump her because she's no good for him, controlling the way he dresses. It sounds to me like she's ashamed of the way he dresses. AGain, like I said, he should talk to his GF about it and if they still don't work things out, he can just say bye bye to his GF...

I would be VERY POed if someone tried to control the way I dress because I dress FOR ME, for MY COMFORT...My comfort is not anybody else's business!

I think she's ashamed too. There's something about what he's wearing that she doesn't like. When I 1st met my hubby I gently tried to tell him not to wear so many ugly t-shirts and to try a new pair of sneakers or shoes (He was wearing old sneakers that were yellow on the bottom plus they were lop-sided). It's not that I was trying to change him but, if he wants a woman to be with him he sometimes has to listen to her. Some men just don't look in the mirror.

If your friend see that his girlfriend over does it than he shouldn't change his clothing for her. After all everyone knows that no matter what.... people do not change. As for my hubby he is really styling now so I feel I had something to do with it. He seems very happy with the way he dresses.

So I admit that last year I forced my bf (now very much ex) to cut his hair because it looked bad...

And in retrospect I think it was because I was ashamed of it- and he changed it (and like, everything else about him that i didnt like) because he'd give in to anything I said.
It really kills a relationship if one persons trying to change the other. If your roommate doesnt want to change his appearance then he should tell his gf that, if she cant deal w/ it thats her problem.

We're talking strictly about the stuff you can see.

As for the psychological stuff, that's a really really really long story for another time.

Why can't he just take or leave her advice? Maybe, rather than trying to control him, she is only trying to help him to see another style of clothes that might make him look more attractive and feel better about himself. I have a tendency to get stuck in my ways and take advice skeptically. There have been times, though, that I've taken the suspect advice and have been damn glad that I did. She can't "control" him by suggesting a change of wardrobe. It's up to him to try on those shoes and heartladen-underwear or whatever, and it's up to him to decide if he digs the new look or not. He just might dig it! So might she.
