Default OK i just watched the episode-Last Show and i'm very Confused

I just finished watching the Last Show and really don't understand why the character Mary Richards was fired if the show revolved around her character. And on top of it, The series ended with Mary not finding another job. BUt Ted get a great new deal but not Mary? I'm sorry but this was a strange ending to a 7 year series. LOL-the lead character is left unemployed as the series ends- That's Wacky with a capital W.

LOL I've never thought about it that way! You have to remember, the main thing was Ted was being kept while all the others were fired. Had Mary kept her job also, that would have ruined the surprise ending. And as for Mary not getting another job right away, I think we can all pretty much assume she got one soon after. Also I think they wanted to leave it to your imagination exactly what happened to her. Maybe right after that, she met Mr. Right and settled down and had some kids. Since it doesn't say what she did, she could've done anything.

But she had just lost her family, you can't expect her to go right out and start looking for a job!!

Kristen

But the betty white character found another job. That's why i couldn't understand why Mary was just jobless as the show came to a close.

But remember, Sue Ann was already actively looking for one. Earlier in the episode, she was going out to collect references. Mary wasn't looking for another job yet. I think the main reason the writers gave Sue Ann that job was for comedic reasons (Namely Murray's line about "cruising at sea" LOL).

Also, Sue Ann didn't restrict her search and found a job outside of her [official ] field. Assuming Mary was looking for a job similar to the one at WJM (i.e., a management position in TV), there would be far fewer (if any) available jobs.

Good point. BTW, nice seeing you around here again, TV Gen. Another thing is, the show started out with Mary not having a job, and I think the writers wanted to end it the same way.

Thank you, Kristen. Also, thanks for pointing out something else I hadn't considered. It may be corny, but I kind of have a thing for stories that come full-circle.
