I agree that Eric's stupidity carried the show in the college years. It's the fact that they made Cory weird that I didn't like. If you notice Eric started out normal enough in the first season. It was around season three when he was studying for the finals, he started to act weird. Then in Season four, he just remained weird. When he started college in Season five, he started getting dumber. And as we all know, it kept on going until the final episode.

No Eric's my fav. character. He was never really bright, I just think it increased as he got older. I think they stayed pretty consistent.
IMO Will Friedle is just a fabulous actor that I think he's the one who made Eric "act" that way, but that's just my opinion.
Cory was always weird IMO, like with Eric it got worse as he got older as it does with lots of people.
I know someone who was normal all through high school but once we graduated he just was totally different. It happens.

Does anyone else think that the character of Eric was just playing dumb to make people laugh. I mean there were many times, when I just felt the character was just trying to be funny, and mybe the other characters thought he was serious. That happens with me alot.

i don't really care cuz eric was always funny even if he did have the iq of a piece of paper. and, shallow as it may be, the main reason i watched the show in the first place was cuz shawn was a babe

I thought Eric was nicer when they made him dumb. He was less self-centered and actually cared about other people. In the beginning, he was a jerk, especially to Cory.

Earlier in the show, Eric proved that he was smart. He took the SAT's, got into a great university and even played father to a young boy for a while.

Fast forward: Eric suddenly gets a heck of a lot dumber; he has a helmet so he won't get hurt and he totally contradicts everything that made him who he was earlier in the series ... a kind, gentle and sensitive individual who was, in fact, a whole lot smarter and more dedicated than everyone thought he was.

BMW, I think, was falling in the ratings; so the writers made changes as last-chance desperate attempts to try and salvage the show for at least a couple more years. A big problem, though, was that the four central people -- Ben, Rider, Will and Danielle -- were getting too old. The characters of Cory and Shawn worked when they were in middle and high school and even early college, but not in their mid-20's; it would just look stupid.

The storylines are also dead by the final season. Granted: there are some hilarious jokes and gags; but the actual stories themselves are lame, far-fetched and wreak of desperation.

Thank God BMW never got to the beyond-low-points of SABRINA, DREW CAREY or JUST SHOOT ME. In the end, I really believe it is Mr. Feeney, Allen and Amy who keep the show from "completely" going under.

I don't think it was that, did you know BMW had been cancelled right after the 4th season ended? I guess ABC changed their minds and brought it back a few months later.

What is was is that BMW had so many different writers which killed alot of the consistency of the characters.
