For people who have sitcoms on DVD, let me know is this a GOOD IDEA - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I bought 3 DVD's and plan to buy some blank VHS tapes and copy the episodes onto the blank tapes and put the DVD in a safe place so they will last longer. So if i want to see those episodes again, I can just get the tape instead of using the DVD all the time. Good idea?

DVDs are almost indestructable. I mean you really have to scratch one hard to produce a visible effect. Since the DVD machine reads them with a laser beam, playing them doesn't degrade them at all. What you're proposing might be a lot of work to protect something that doesn't need much protecting.

But can't they get scratched? A scracthed DVD doesn't affect the show when it's playing?

If it's a bad scratch, there will be a problem on some part of the show(s), but I've had a player for about four months now, and so far I haven't scratched one that badly. Your idea won't hurt anything, but it is sort of a lot of work to protect against a small danger. And you won't get the same amazing picture resolution when you watch the tape, not to mention any extra features on the DVD.

Well the way I look at it you would just be wasting your time and money going out and buying a bunch of blank tapes. If you bought the DVDs you might as well use them. As long as you take care of them they should last for years and years. A VHS tape will eventually lose it's picture quality if you watch it a lot. That won't happen with a DVD no matter how much you view it, skip scenes, fast forward ect.

Exactly. Soooooooo many people assume that DVDs are exactly like VHS tapes. Well, they're not. I've had a DVD player for 7 months now with 14 DVDs. I've watched one of the DVD's many times in the past month and it's still VERY sharp. My stepfamily has DVDs they got a few years ago that they watch a LOT and it is still just as clear as the first day they got them. You'd practically have to break the DVD in half just to notice loss in picture quality. Right now, DVD recorders are really expensive and once they get to be cheap enough for me to buy, I'm going to buy one and transfer all my stuff on VHS tape to DVD.

DVDS ARE IN NO WAY LIKE VHS TAPES. PERIOD. No questions asked!

Yeah, you'd have to, like, play frisbee with the DVD to screw it up. It takes A LOT for DVDs to screw up, such as the frequent switching of DVD players. (Rental store DVDs I have a lot of trouble with.) In most cases when you're experiencing skipping and such, just spray it with Windex and wipe with a tissue. (Not in circles, though. Straight up and down.)

DVD rock.

no... that just makes it pointless to buy the dvds!!!! why would u want to constantly watch VHS quality when you have the DVD quality which is perfect...and let me tell you, DVDs take a LOT longer to wear out than VHS....

take care of your DVDs and don't let them get scratched... ways to prevent getting scratched DVDs: if not in the dvd player, keep in the case at all times and NEVER let them sit around... keep the cases from far reach of young children who like getting into things... -- that's about all you need to do to keep flawless dvds...

Well i have had VHS tapesfor 10 years with the same quality. Let's see if the DVD's last until 2013

Oh, they will. My dad has had a DVD player since about 1997/98 (when they first became popular) and we have some DVD's from that time period and they are STILL perfect.

Believe me, DVDs are NOT like VHS tapes at all. You'd have to pound a nail into a DVD to notice a change in quality (but then it wouldn't be playable anyway). No questions asked.
