Denise could have told him that her friend already had a boyfriend. Denise let THeo make a fool of himself instead of just telling Theo she already was involved.

yea that's true, that should have been the first thing she said when she asked to speak to him outside his room. But it wouldn't have been as funny.

I think that Denise didn't know Suzanne, her friend, had a boyfriend. I know that this doesn't come across as making sense really because being at the same high school Denise most likely would have known especially if they were friends, but if you remember, when Suzanne's boyfriend shows up at the Huxtable home, Mark I think his name was, Denise greets him as if she doesn't know him very well. She says, you're on the wrestling team right? I think she was written that line to indicate to us that she didn't know Suzanne had a boyfriend or that Denise was even thinking about it, albeit it could have been written better. You know how high school relationships can be very fleeting. I think what is weird about this episode though, is as my boyfriend brought up to me once when I was watching and I had always wondered it myself, was what was Suzanne's boyfriend doing there in the first place? Why would he have shown up in the middle of them working on a project for school. Maybe he was driving her home, but it's still kind of strange. Of course the purpose was to point out to us as an audience that Suzanne had a boyfriend, but it could have been written better. It's never explained on the show why he's there.
