Is winning a Championship overrated? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

The reason I ask this question is because the NBA Finals ended about two weeks ago, and I have literally heard nothing about it ever since. I just find it strange how all season long everyone talks about winning the NBA title, and how it's the pinnacle of what an athlete can accomplish, and how nothing compares, yet after that final game ends you hardly hear anything about it. I can just imagine many of the Spurs sitting at home on their ten thousand dollar sofas asking themselves: is this really all their is to winning the NBA title? I mean, they work their butts off all season, flying from city to city, and all they get is a lousy 20 minute celebration where the P.A. system plays We are the Champions over and over again. Maybe their is more to winning the NBA title then that, but it all just seems extremely overhyped, and overrated to me. What do you guys think?

Yes, it is overrated if people win titles in a particular sport over and over again because they must think that if whatever they do to win the championship is the plan to keep winning them then they will just do the same thing year after year and enjoy title after title. Notice how extremely happy that a team is when they win their first title but after each sequential title the extreme happiness fades away.

On the other hand, no, if the person wins the title for the very first time. He would think that all of his hard work paid off and would be extra happy to win the title in the end. But let him win the title over and over again and it does become overrated.

The same thing applies to the team personnel, fans, and the title winning city at-large.

So overall, it is highly overrated. I hope all of that made sense.

I wouldn't judge the importance of a championship's over or underrating by how the media plays it up or down. To fig with the media. They overhype whatever is popular to death in the build up and then drop it like a hot rock when it's a done deal. The players have accomplished the ultimate in their given sport, and they know it. They aren't sitting home and pouting because the media has slowed down on their exposure. A lot of players would just as soon that the media get off their backs anyway. They know that the media is about junk more than the actual sport. All season long you'll find the media zeroing in on soap opera type stuff rather than what individual or team is playing well or not so well.
To win a World Series or a championship is what a player strives for more than anything else in his or her sport. As a bonus of that, the money usually follows, so it's a no lose game for the athletes.

I think it's definitely overrated for some teams, not mentioning any names *coughnewyorkcough* I mean, it's like they've won so much, it's not even a game anymore, because they KNOW they're going to win. Then if they don't, and they lose to some crappy team like the Diamondbacks, everyone gets so disappointed.

It may seem overated to the average joe or jane but to the people who work hard all year and actually win it. It is a major accomplishment for them. Plus nobody really wanted San Antonio to win except for the city of San Antonio and the Spurs fans. The guys got a ring and David Robinson got to retire knowing it was all worth it. Im proud of them and my city

Yeah you make a good point. Ultimately only one team can win the Championship while the other 28, or 29 teams, and fans just end up disappointed. One of the reasons I asked this question is because I heard Deion Sanders awhile back talking about winning the Superbowl, and how it was a big letdown for him. I also have heard a few other athletes say things similar to that. They mentioned how their whole lives they saw the media build it up like it was some great big thing, and how when they got their, it didn't live up to the hype. I guess in the end it just comes down to the person. To some people it's a great accomplishment, while to others it's a letdown.
