Okay...
I'm no expert at this stuff, but I do know that $1,048 is a hella lotta money, LOL. So, can anyone tell me whether if this laptop is worth buying?

Thanks.

Cool

Hey, I'm about to buy a Dell Inspirion laptop, too! I want to buy a 1100, though.

I say, why not go for it...Don't forget the standard laptop bag. You'll need it.

Cool. What's making you choose 1100 over 5100? Is there something better about it or something? Just wondering.

Oh, I'm not really planning on travelling with it, but thanks for the suggestion.
Our home's too small for two computers. So I'm just gonna use the new laptop as if it were another desktop and giving the old desktop to my brother.
Plus, I don't wanna get robbed.

btw, is 2.4 Ghz a lot? What's the highest it can go? Anyone know?

Yes 2.4ghz is a lot... The highest they are being sold is up to like 3ghz or so?

Just a couple years back it was up to 800mhz or so, Then 1ghz was big, it just keeps going up... Has anyone here seen any computers sold with more then 3ghz?

I'm choosing the 1100 for when I start college in the fall. This computer I'm using here is pretty old. I'm still using my original computer monitor, which is from November 1996 (according to the manufacture date sticker on the back), but I'm not using my original CPU anymore, I got a used one in 2001 but that one is dying too.

I just need something that will let me do stuff for college AND let me play my NES ROM's on it.

Other people replied about the GHz business so I don't need to clarify that one. I want at least a 2 to 2.7 GHz - that'd be really nice, a big step up from my crappy 467MHz

The price doesn't really matter to me (what the heck am I saying? Of course it does, lol) but like, I'm just wondering if I'm getting the most out of what I'm paying for.
I'll be using my life savings to buy this laptop (including birthday, new year's and Christmas money), so I want to make sure it's worth every penny. I need a job, ugggh.
For example, if I can get another laptop cheaper somewhere else with the exact some features, I'd like to know about that.

P.S. Does anyone know anything about USB memory keys? I've read that many Dell laptops/desktops are removing the floppy disk drive and are encouraging customers to use USB memory keys as an alternative. Anyways, I went to Circuit City today and the guy there told me that no software is required if I had Windows 98 or higher, but how does it work? Is there a special drive in the computer for it? Is there a program inside the key that automatically installs when you plug it in or something? How do you save/delete files on it? Has anyone ever used one? How long do they last? They ARE reusable, right?

Oh, and another thing...Is it possible to share one printer with a PC and a laptop if there's only one plug for the printer? If so, how is this done?

Okay, that's all for now, thanks again.

Legally, I have a right to the ROMs since my mom worked at a video store when I was younger and would bring home a lot of NES games for me.

I know, I know. It's still illegal.

Oh, and also, how many programs would I be able to run at a time with 384MB worth of memory? I know it depends on how much memory a program takes to run, but let's say... can I run AIM, AOL 8.0, MSN 8.0, MSNIM, 5 Microsoft Word docs, Winamp, and paint at the same time? If it can, then I think I'm all set, LOL. Although I'm not planning on running that many programs at once, I think it's best to be on the safe side.

Yes you should be able too.. I have 256MB ram on this one and lets see what I can run,,

*Opens up Winmx*
(Already has AOL 8.0 Open)
*Opens up IE*
*Loads AIM*
*Opens up Notepad*
*Opens up another notepad*
*Opens up Paint*
*Opens up Starry Night backyard* (Which Takes a lot of memory to run, It recommends having 256MB RAM I believe)

All this open and working fine (though my toolbar is cluttered)

And Im going to stop there...I also have Sygate Personal Firewall running in the background lookin at the internet connections for hackers, norton Anti virus Auto Protect looking for signs of viruses... And Seti@Home looking for signs of ET life in the sky... You'll be fine

Okay, I've just read a few bad reviews from CNet about this laptop's keyboard layout. (Thanks, Justin)

Anyways, does anyone happen to have an Inspiron 5100 and would like to take a picture of the layout for me or something or maybe describe how it's different from a desktop's keyboard? LOL.

I've tried finding a few pictures myself, however, none of them clearly differentiates which button is which or anything, so...if you can find a close-up for me, that'll be great.

I know I'm asking for so much, LOL.
Thanks.
