Default What is the most embarassing moment in rock history?

I don't think anything can beat Mike Love's speech during The Beach Boys' Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction in 1988.

Quote:
"And I think it's wonderful to be here tonight, but I also think it's sad that there are other people who aren't here tonight. And, uh, those are the people who have passed away, those are the obvious ones. But the other not-so-obvious ones are people like Paul McCartney, who couldn't be here tonight because he's in a lawsuit with Ringo and Yoko. That's what he sent a telegram to some, uh, high priced attorney in this room, you know. And that's a bummer, because we're talking about harmony, right, and the world. If we can't get it together in America and in England, and harmony within our groups. I mean, beleive it, you can beleive it the Beach Boys have their own interstescene(?) or whatever you call it, squabbles. But that's a bummer when Ms. Ross can't make it, you know? The Beach Boys have continued to do, about, we did about 180 performances last year. I'd like to see the Mop-Tops match that! I'd like to see Mick Jagger get out on this stage and do I Get Around versus Jumpin' Jack Flash, any day now. And I'd like to see some people kick out the jams, and I challenge the Boss to get up on stage and jam. I wanna see Billy Joel, see if he can still tickle ivories, lemmee see. I know Mick Jagger won't be here tonight, he's gonna have to stay in England. But I'd like to see us in the Coliseum and he at Wembley Stadium because he's always been chicken**** to get on stage with the Beach Boys."
Later that year, Mike again embarassed the band by making them record "Kokomo."

Yeah, that was career suicide, although she didn't burn it; she ripped it. It was on an episode of Saturday Night Live in 1992. I wasn't watching that episode, but I watched the next week's SNL with Joe Pesci as the host. During his monologue, Pesci went off on her, saying that if he was there, he would have picked her up by the... eyebrows and shake some sense into her.

Hmmm, I think there're many- maybe the Michael Jackson kid scandal. Vanilla Ice's movie debut? Or when Chuck Berry was busted for installing a camera in his restaurant's ladies room. Maybe this recent R. Kelly sex tape thing? Jerry Lee Lewis & his 13 year old cousin?

"Glitter"?

This list could be real long...

You're right, Rickenbacker. Here are a few more that come to mind:

2002 - Pete Townshend does a little online "research."

1987-present - An adult R. Kelly does a little offline "research."

1985 - Fantasy Records sues John Fogerty for plagiarizing himself ("Run Through The Jungle"/"The Old Man Down The Road").

1989 - 53-year-old Bill Wyman leaves The Rolling Stones to marry his 18-year-old girlfriend... who he'd been dating for five years.

1980 - Paul McCartney brings something green with him to Japan. The authorities see it in his luggage. Paul is jailed for nine days.

1997 - Fiona Apple gives the most bizarre and arrogant acceptance speech in history ("This world is bull****!").

1996 - Van Halen, newly reunited with David Lee Roth, presents an award to Beck Hansen at the MTV Video Music Awards. During the acceptance speech, Roth averts attention away from Beck by "playing to the crowd" in the background - flailing his arms, "dancing;" etc. This was incredibly embarassing for Eddie Van Halen. Roth is kicked once again out of the band the next day.

1998 - Van Halen releases "Van Halen III." Gary Cherone. Enough said.

1964-present - Courtney Love exists.

I'll think of more later.

but, she's not embarrassed. she's too high and trashed all the time to notice how much of a fool she is. she fits into the 'bad things that happened to the music business' category better...

I forgot to mention - Bob Dylan was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame that night. Here's an excerpt from his acceptance speech:

Quote:
"I want to thank Mike Love... for not mentioning me."
I love that man!

Oh God- speaking of Courtney- how about the time about 10 years ago, during some MTV awards show, Krist Novoselic tossed his bass in the air & it came right down on his head! It was right in the middle of a song Nirvana were performing. He collapsed & they kept playing. He tried to get up once or twice & fell again. He was totally knocked senseless. That musta been embarrassing.
