Default Darlene....the first Goth on TV?

Hey guys, I was trying to think if I had seen any other Goth characters(main) on any tv shows prior to Darlene. She must have inspired plenty of girls, maybe she was ahead of her time. Any thoughts?

I would say so. Even the youngest son on "Home Improvement" who shot up to 6 feet tall in like one year had those Goth-like qualities (wearing black, withdrawn) but wasn't as assertive as Darlene. I'd say Darlene was more depressed than Goth.

Darlene was never a goth, she was just a depressed anti-social loner.

I agree with the other posters, I never thought of Darlene to be goth. She did have some goth like qualities about her, but I don't recall her ever lighting candles, or involved in any strange rituals like so many goths seem to be into. I just viewed her as a lost, and depressed girl who dressed in black as a way to express her dark views of the world.

She wasn't goth....her character was very poetic/artistic, so wearing black was a symbol of how she was feeling.

Darlene was a sarcastic middle child. She was very smart and was similar to her mother.

When you look back on Roseanne, don't you think Darlene didnt seem like the person who would get pregnant so young. She seemed like a girl who was going to have a life first before she got married and had a kid.

Darlene got kind of annoying by the seventh season. She seemed to do everything that she once hated. And does anyone remember in that Disneyworld episode where they find out that theyre going and everyone just starts dancing(including Darlene). That was the most bizarre sequence I have ever seen on Roseanne. Anyway, I really liked Darlene up until when she started going to the art school.

I agree, I didn't like Darlene as much after she went off to school. She started getting annoying, and her cutdowns to the Connors started coming off as mean to me because it was like she was no longer one of them, in some ways.

I have to agree with you. When i first saw the disney world episode and when she was dancing... i was like OMG! I never thought i'd see her dance (like that) before. But i have to say I do like Darlene in every episode. except when she dumps David. anyway I think she ROCKS!!! I have a feeling that i'm going to be the only one to say this but: I LOVE THE 9TH SEASON!!! And i want to them to make a show like: "The Conner's after 6 years" I want to see how Darlene's and David's girl is and if she's like Darlene with all those craks. or if she's like David all... what's the word? um...wimpy. and i want to see some more stuff too.

I never really thought of Darlene as goth either, i think like others here have said...that she was depressed, maybe trying to make a statement....but after a while she stopped wearing so much black...then she just dyed her hair black
I thought after Darlene went to school she was just trying to find out about herself and live her life .....she ended up with David anyways ---
