this is something that I've always wondered about: I know they filmed the first season in black-and-white because color was too expensive at the time, but why was the theme & the opening different from the color eps.?

They changed the opening and the theme because the show was going to color. The first theme is more romantic, the second is more carefree, fun, still romantic, just not as serious sounding. The opening was also changed to take advantage of color. Basically that's why they changed them, because they wanted a more "colorful" theme, and a more color using opening.
