It depends. If I go to a track I'm always going for the reason of doing some sort of specific workout. 8 times a quarter with a 200 meter jog in between. 6 times a half with ...etc. Sometimes I'll do something similar on the trails I run on. I have a few trails that aren't measured exactly by distance by I can run portions of it at different speeds and know what kind of workout I'm getting. On the roads near my house, the same thing applies. I have certain sections that I'll time myself for certain intended workouts. This is all only for when I'm training to race. If I'm just maintaining fitness -- as I'm doing these days -- then I'll just run the roads and trails without timeing anything. Many of the runs I do when I am training to race are also just for mileage. I stay in the comfort zone to build strength and endurance, so I don't not need a lot of recovery between those types of runs. I know...that was more information then you were asking for.

I don't run usually unless I have to run laps in physed class. I do roller blade though sometimes. I should actually roller blade more often and make it my fitness program. I once got up early to roller blade in the morning on a Saturday around 9am to 10 am and I've been thinking of rollerblading more during the summer.

I had my mom map out a mile in our neighborhood on bike which has a thing that says how many miles she's riding. And then I run that.

When I run on my on I run laps and suicides. Usually with Basketball I run suicides and sprints. Softball, laps around the field and Softball suicides. If you don't know what a suicide is it's running from the wall of the gym to the foul line back to the out of bounds line, to the half court line, back to the out of bounds line, to the foul line on the other side of the court, back to the out of bounds line, and finally to the other out of bounds line back to the out of bounds line. We usually end up running 15 of those. Softball suicides are different, you run to first, then back to home, then to second, then back to home, then to third, then back to home, and finally to home, and then back to home. 10 of those are enough. Softball suicides are killer, B-ball suicides aren't as bad. I usually run around the court for 5 minutes or around the softball fence 3 times. (We have a BIG field, I mean BIG, we're talking major league long) Anyway, too much info I'm sure. lol.

Remember running the mile in elementary school? Well, I live 1/2 a block away from mine, so I remember that 4 laps equals a mile, and run that. Sometimes I time myself, sometimes I dont, and I run by myself, because it gives me lots of time to think.
