Red face Jaci Velasquez of "Chasing Papi" criticized

Velasquez meets criticism for content of new movie

HOLLYWOOD (EP)--Christian music star Jaci Velasquez is receiving heavy criticism from two family-oriented Web sites for the moral content of scenes in here recently released movie "Chasing Papi." The PG-rated comedy was released April 16 by 20th Century Fox.

The plot of the movie revolves around three single women who all think they have found the perfect man, "Tomas." After discovering that he has been dating all three women at the same time,"Cici," "Lorena," and "Patricia," played by Velasquez, fight for the affection of Tomas.

In the first scene of the movie that received criticism from Screenit.com, all three women go to Tomas' house without knowing the others are present. The women reportedly walk out from different rooms in the house hoping to suprise their man, but
instead see each other. The problem: all three women are wearing lingerie purchased by Tomas.

The Web site also reports that later in the movie, Cici "tears or otherwise modifies Lorena's and Patricia's clothing to make them look sexier for a dance number."

According to Focus on the Family's Plugged In Film Reviews, the third controversial scene occurs when all three women "sleep on the bed" with and unconscious Tomas.

Velasquez posted a message on her Web site in her own defense.

"To put your minds at rest, no I haven't left my personal faith in God, and I don't intend to," the singer-actress said.

She also said that "by the grace and power of God" she was able to witness to those on the set of the movie.

"I am grateful for the production company, because they allowed me to change and edit several scenes that I was uncomfortable doing because of my beliefs," she said. "The process of deciding to enter Hollywood was a very thoughtful, prayerful one."

Plugged In's Steven Isaac was not convinced.

"Don't let Jaci's starring role mislead your family," he wrote. "Chase teens and tweens away from Papi. There's no other way to interpret the implications of this 'lingerie scene' as anything other than sexual. Women simply don't bounce into a man's bedroom wearing trench coats and little else for any other purpose other than sex."

K...I've now seen the movie (download it on Kazaa ) and it's not "sexual" when they are in the lingerie. It's funny. And they all fall asleep on the bed after getting drunk....that wasnt mentioned. You'd think that they would have been all over that one. Tomas was unconscious because of his own doing, not drinking, and they all fell asleep on the bed, fully clothed. That's the dumbest reason for boycotting a movie ever.

I'm right with you there. Last night, for the first time in a while, I felt, I really felt SCARED of all the religious psychos. Did I want to be identified with them anymore?? Jesus was a man of peace and all, but that's a bad word these days. I almost feel like I'm at the point where I was about 15 years ago.

But what I want to know is--WHERE THE HECK IS THAT MOVIE PLAYING IN MY AREA??? I wanna see Jaci gettin' wacky--in that lingerie!!!! Such NAUGHTY, NAUGHTY Christians!!!!!

I'm just curious, why do you consider this guy to be a Religious psycho? To me he just sounds like a very devout man with strong beliefs. The same way many people believe that there's nothing wrong with a Christian girl who's barely more than 18 years old running around in lingerie, he just believes the opposite. How is that psycho? I am a big Jaci Valesquez fan, I have been since I first heard her music, and I happen to know that many of her biggest fans are young, impressionable girls. This guys concern seems to be the fact that a well known Christian singer is in a movie wearing lingerie among other things. Obviously alot of young girls are going to want to see this movie, so I admire this guys stance, and concerns. Now as far as whether Jaci being in this movie as a Christian woman is wrong or not, that I don't know. I think I'll have to dig a bit more into the Bible to find that answer, but I certainly don't see anything wrong with this guy holding a Christian music artist to a higher standard than an average person. Anyway would you please explain to me why you think this guys feelings are psycho?

Cool re: Jaci

I thought Jaci was older...isn't she about in her early 20's by now?
Anyway, about "religious psychos", I think I was projecting my frustrations with religious neo-conservatives who are in love with the war, etc., who want to control every aspect of society. But I think Jaci has a right to do whatever she feels is right. Where do we start making this kind of rule where a person who personally is a Christian can't play characters who are sexually appealing or get into sexually compromising situations? It's something that adds to the plot. I still think this has something more to do with the idea that "a Christian is looking dressing or acting sexy" than it has to do with protecting the young'uns. People have more of a problem with a "sexy/sexual Christian" and are using the "shield the kiddies' eyes" as an excuse. Gee, folks, if this is a PG-13 movie anyway, why are you letting them watch it??
Okay, this gives them the idea that "premarital sex is okay". Hmmm. How do we know this is not a cautionary tale of what happens if you hook up with the wrong guy? "So she shouldn't be actin' like that anyhows." When you see a movie which features a Christian actor/actress, do you see the said Christian, or do you see the character they're playing? How do we not have a problem with a Christian playing any other kind of morally unsavory character (a bully like Billy Zabka in "The Karate Kid", or Biff in the "Back to the Future, who yelled "sh t!!!!"), but with a character who acts sexual, that's the worst thing in the world...

Btw, how come Blair admitted she was a "tease" who looked all hot n' sexy in those shorts in the first season of FOL?? What did that say about Lisa??
