Default Fred Sanford-Bad Role Model For Kids

I have been a fan of Sanford and Son for many years and Redd Foxx cracks me up, especially when he fakes a heart attack. However, I feel that Fred Sanford is a bad role model for kids because he's cruel and insensitive to everyone around him.

He constantly calls Lamont a dummy, threatens to give people "five across your lip," lies, fakes heart attacks to get attention and is an overall grouch. Feel free to post your thoughts.

Question Fred's not a bad role model

Fred isn't a bad role model. He just spoke his mind, but deep down he cared for everyone around him. He just didn't show it all the time. I am a great fan of fred sanford, and the way he spoke and acted is what made him a classic.

1st of all, I don't think the show is aimed at kids. 2nd, I doubt too many of today's kids are even aware of this show's existance. Lastly, I was a young kid when I saw them 1st aired & I don't hate everyone around me. (all boils down to parenting, folks) I was too young to get the social/ethnic jokes anyway. I laughed at all the Aunt Ester, Grady & Rollo jokes.

C'mon he was a terrible role model. Look at the MESS of a home he had Lamont subjected to........ It's a miracle Lamont walked away sane.

Default TOO HARSH

I think your being too had on fred. Did you ever see an episode in which they where put out of there home like on the honeymooners. Did they manage to keep clothes and food. Did you ever see lamont put gas in the truck. For all we know he would fill it up everytime. Did we see the sanford bathroom. They did manage to purchase Sanford Arms so the situation could not be all bad. In life you have those who believe in self preservation first and Fred is one of those. As far as racist...you would be surprised to hear what most say behind close doors.

Fred: I aint no racist
Lamont: you are a racist
Fred: remember when that white woman came for the census...didn't I let her use the toilet.

a true racist would not even let her in the house.

Ditto.

You gotta admit a lot of kids today have no idea what Sanford and Son is. The kids in my town prob. think the 1970s were back in the prehistoric days. Yeah, that's not saying much, is it? The kids in my town are in the 'now'. Now is good. The past sucks. The past isn't even worth remembering. Not all think that way, but most do.

Yeah, I'm sure if you were growing up in the 70s you might've watched the show. I wasn't a child of the 70s, but I watched Sanford and Son when I was a kid when it aired on TBS. I don't think I got the social/ethnic jokes either.

The show wasn't directed towards a young audience - not now, not then. Since it's for a more mature audience that doesn't really need role models, Fred doesn't really have to be a "good" one. His behavior is just to generate laughs.

Actually Fred was a bad example of a father for kids-LOL But like i said, The Fred Sanford character wasn't created for kids to see, only adults.

So true. I didn't think of that when I originally posted my first reply, but you are right.
