Default Ricky? Jealous? Nah!

We know that Ricky wouldn't let Lucy be in any of his shows or movies he did out in Hollywood. Do you think he was jealous of Lucy?

Uh, I hate to say it but "Lucy" had no talent (Not that this applies to Lucille Ball herself, because we all know she had loads of talent )

Then again, come to think of it, Lucy did some decent dance routines. It was just a problem when she tried to sing

Ricky had nothing to be jealous about. He was a terrific singer and dancer, and an amazing drummer. Lucy was lousy at everything she tried to do, except chaos-causing, naturally, which she excelled at. His trying to stop her from getting into showbiz was just a plot device.

I couldn't believe it when first heard Lucille Ball sing for real, in one of her films. I'd only ever heard her sing as Lucy, and we all know what that sounds like . Mind you, she used to prove to be oddly good at singing and dancing when the story called for it...!

Still wasn't as good as Ricky though. (Or Desi)

(Stands back and waits for Splain to jump in...)

That made me laugh, for more than one reason! LOL! Yes, isn't it amazing that she couldn't sing in one episode but made him look like a bum in another, remember her dancing with Van, or vancing with Dan, i have to admit, Desi was great with the ad lib in that one though! She could also be incredibly stupid one minute and incredibly smart in another, yes, the ONE single flaw i have always been annoyed by on this show and watching it for half a century, why couldn't they have someone in charge of continuity, so they wouldn't have such glaring mistakes that made no sense. Then i recall it was a comedy show that just relied on these haphazard plot devices to move things along or suit that show's particular plotline. After all, those three and eventually five writers, wrote all those great shows in such a short period of time, when you compare it to today's fifty writers writing one show once in a while and NEVER making us laugh, you cut them some slack! Hey Mick, i'm not always defending Lucy, just stating FACTS, LOL!

Hey Claude.. someone has to defend Lucy on these boards Looks like its you and me to defend!! I agree.. a comedy doesnt have to make sense all the time. That is what I have been saying all along. Its entertainment it doesnt have to be realistic.

Nothing Lucy, or Lucille, could ever make Ricky, or Desi, look like a bum. He was way better than she was!

Nope, don't remember! I probably have seen it, about ten years ago. One day they may get around to releasing the episode on DVD!

You see Ash, the poor man is sitting there in Britain and Mad Cow all around him and everything, it was bound to happen, reached his brain and all! LOL! Ok, One had to get jobs for the OTHER all the time, who was it again, oh yeah, this bongo player couldn't get jobs because in movies, they were talkies back then and nobody could understand him, so she got him a job as Hope's bandleader, then she got him a job on her show, but again they refused, so she said no Desi, no show, so they relented, he tried to come back after a while in a new show, but without Lucy, it lasted a season and a half, then he wrote a book about their love story and that did well, of course, it was about the Queen of Television and her husband, whose name escapes me at the moment, LOL! Seriously, and i'm not kidding Mick, she loved that man so much that when he died and almost nobody remembered him or went to his funeral or wrote about him in the papers, till she got things going, as usual, and the next day, he was all over the papers, her people had done their work and he got a fitting tribute. He was a great father, a good business man and if he hadn't married the Queen of Comedy, he would have been the answer to a trivia question, but, he made her happy, had class, and chose the right projects for her, unlike her second husband who was a dunce in that department. The two of them created beautiful kids and the greatest TV show that was ever created, a perfect match. By the way Mick, i found some Doctor Who DVD's and thought of you, i looked at and read the boxes, but still have no idea what that was all about!

Long sentence, lol! Anyway, I don't know if you are giving Desi enough credit. It's not like he would be sitting at home jobless if Lucy hadn't gotten him jobs with Hope, on ILL, etc. Her motivation for getting him those jobs was not to save his career, but to keep him at home. He was a very successful bandleader and would be touring the country, far away from her, otherwise. Granted, the popularity of nightclubs slowly began to decline, but there were still jobs for Desi. He was well-known and still young and sexy. People wanted to see him perform. So I wouldn't paint Lucy as the sole person who got Desi's career going. He was very much his own man. But in Lucy's defense, I don't agree that one of them was any more talented than the other. They each had their own unique talents which combined to help create the biggest tv show of all time.

Darlin, you know very well i only came out guns blazin because he attacked Lucy insinuating that she couldn't match his talent which is just plain ridiculous! Let's quote HIM again, Lucy was 90% of the show, the rest of us were just props, good props mind you, but props nonetheless. Of course you're right, she DID get him that job with Hope, so he wouldn't be on the road chasing those babes all over the country, she insisted he stick to the Hollywood variety! LOL! Did she not insist that he do HER show, so eventually his talents as a producer director were discovered, and then our little genius sold the rights to I Love Lucy and bought RKO with the money, instead of keeping the shows which would have meant that he would have left money when he died instead of debts. BUT, he was the LOVE of her life and a great talent, yes, charismatic and enjoyed life, THERE you have me, he knew how to live and enjoy life, she did NOT! But, seriously, i think he would have been another Xavier Cugat once the nightclubs dissapeared. In other words, forgotten by the masses. The proof of that is that when he died, he was forgotten, and yet he was this BIG time star of the most popular TV show of all time and a great producer and studio owner, so imagine if all that hadn't happened. . .

Gotta go with Mickey on this one. DON'T HIT ME!

They were equally talented at what they did as Lucille and Desi...but Lucy Ricardo...she had nothing on Ricky.

And that continuity thing, even if they weren't looking for it, don't you think someone would have noticed the Mertzes had too many washing machines?

Splain dear, I was teasing. I don't think Lucy was talentless, and I wasn't attacking her. I do, however, think that Desi was funnier. And I prefer his singing voice. And I'm almost certain that she couldn't play drums better than him!

As for the rest... It's not Desi's fault, and no reflection on his talents, that he couldn't get movie jobs because "nobody could understand him". That's America's hang up, not his! The reason Lucy had to work hard to get him on board ILL was because of racism, not because he wasn't talented enough. And the reason his death went practically unreported before her interference is because the media is a fickle thing. If he was dying today instead, with the current craze for nostalgia, it would probably be reported every which way. Being forgotten by the media doesn't mean you're less talented than the people who aren't forgotten.

Hey, i was teasing too, i LOVE Desi, i have only that negative thing about selling the rights to the show to CBS to buy RKO, the rest i was kidding about, and you could not have stated it better, true, it was racism, and he was the most charismatic fun guy in the entertainment industry, and MOST of her jokes on the show would not have gotten the reaction they did if the world's greatest straight man had not done such a great job, you're absolutely right! When will you guys UNDERSTAND me, I'm French and not always clear in my comments, stop worrying about my reactions, we're all friends here discussing things, the thing i like most about THIS board is there is no constant fawning over Lucy, but bash her and all bets are off! LOL!

I'm not reading your reactions wrong, don't worry. You might be French and misunderstood - I'm British and too dry! People on boards always take my meaning wrong too.
