Um.. well
Cheers began September 30, 1982 and yes the original cast was only: Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Nicholas Colasanto, Rhea Pearlman, and George Wendt. John Ratzenberger was considered an extra until the second season, But ofcourse out of all the xtra barflies he got the most lines. On Most of the Cast shots for the first season only feature Sam, Diane, Coach, and Carla.

More facts:
Fraiser came in 3rd season, after Diane had checked herself into the mental hospital after Sam and her broke up....lol she went crazy and he went back to drinking... Diane was on of Fraiser's patients and they became a couple..

Woody came in 4th season, when Coach, Ernie Pantuzzo, died (RIP)

Lilith's first appearance was in the 4th season but she really didn't start appearing frequently until the 5th season

5th season (1987) Diane left

6th season (1987-1988) Rebecca came in, after Sam had sold the bar to a company....

and then excluding the xtra characters like Paul, and tim....that's about it.

p.s. the pic below is one of the publicity shots for the first season.

something else you might be intersted in: John Ratzenberger (Cliff) was first considered to play Norm.
They first wanted William Devane & Jullia Duffy (she played Stefanie on "Newhart", if you remember that show) for Sam & Diane.

im sorry but i think it was that they wanted (as a couple) Fred Dryer (who latter showed up as dave) and Julia Duffy (who later showed up as Rebecca), But when they saw Ted and Shelley together, there was no doubt in their minds that they had found their Sam and Diane.

Lilith's first episode was Second Time Around, but she was only in that episode briefly at the beginning when Frasier takes her to the bar and introduces her as his date. She gets called away by the hospital and tells Diane to tell Frasier she doesn't want to see him again. (They reference the date in "Abnormal Psychology".) Also, I think there were three couples they considered: William Devane and Lisa Eichhorn, Fred Dryer and Julia Duffy, and Ted and Shelley. Fred Dryer and Julia Duffy both guest starred in the first season.

Yes but according to James Burrows, Glen Charles, and Les Charles the closests to snatching the roles of Sam and Diane were Fred Dryer and Julia Duffy....well that's up until Ted and Shelley were but together!
