I've wondered about this for a while.
What ever happened to Chuck Cunningham, Ritchie's brother? I don't remember him ever being mentioned or included after 1975 (although I was quite young). Did they just not mention him anymore, or did they write him out or have him killed in Viet Nam or anything like that? |

I like Chuck, but he just wasn't meant to be. He was a good guy, but he just didn't have any chemistry with the rest of the cast I guess. But of course it could have also been that the actor who played Chuck didn't want to be an actor anymore. There seemed to be a few reasons why Chuck didn't stay longer in the show than 1975.
This is my views of why Chuck didn't stay longer, despite I'm not completely sure. |

After Fonzie moved into the apartment above the garage, Chuck was no longer needed because Fonzie now served as Richie's "big brother" and was readily available to give him advise about girls, etc. So that is why Chuck disappeared.

In an interview, Gary Marshall said that with Henry's popularity with the Fonz, they had to write him into the script more. In creating more scenes for the Fonz, they thought it best to write someone out of the script. Instead of addressing this on the show, they just acted like Chuck Cunningham never existed.
Many joke about what ever happened to Chuck Cunningham. Was he obducted by aliens? Did he get lost on his way home from basketball practice? Even at the Happy Days Reunion at the very end of the show when everyone is joking around, Tom Bosley hears someone say something and he says, "Chuck? Is that you?" In the episode of saving Inspiration Point, when they had a hearing, Howard clearly stated that he had a wonderful wife, a beautiful daughter, and a smart aleck son. Thus, finally dismissing the idea of Chuck Cunningham all together. So there it is folks, what ever happened to Chuck Cunningham? You decide, because Gary Marshall never gave a serious answer to that question. When I was contacting McFarland toy manufacturer asking them to produce 6 inch tall action figures of Happy Days, (McFarland did the Austin Powers action figures), many people suggested which ones to have made. I was suggesting that something come with each action figure - With the Fonz, a jukebox - with Richie - the table from Arnold's - etc. With Chuck, I suggested a basketball and a map to help him find his way home. Four days ago, I finished a book entitled "Happy Days ~ Legends Live On". It's a fiction story 10 years from where the series left off. 22 chapters. In it, Fonzie addresses Richie with the question, "Hey, what ever happened to Chuck?" I'm offering the book as one of the prizes to my trivia contest in July and don't want to give away Richie's answer. (Sorry) But after all these years I think I came up with one good answer. I'll post it later... |
