Default Collecting "WINGS" On Video....WHY????

I can't help but wonder what it is about the "WINGS" series that makes us want to tape and KEEP every episode?

There are many other TV series that I enjoy watching, but I'm not that interested in owning the entire run on video. (For instance, I enjoy "Cheers" and "Frasier", but I don't really care if I have every episode on tape or not...and I can't see myself even TRYING to tape and keep every episode of those series).

I know that many of you are just like me in that you want the entire "Wings" series in your video collection....Do you feel that way about OTHER series too?

What it is that makes us want to own EVERY episode of the "Wings" series?

yeah, there is only one other show that I've actually taped with the intention of keeping it on tape...

When "Farscape" was in its first run, I started taping every episode, starting with the end of its 3rd season (because that was actually when I started watching the show). It was already being released on DVD, but they were only on the 1st season, and releasing each DVD very slowly. hehe. so right now, I have the first 2 and a half seasons of Farscape on DVD, which is where the DVD"s are up to right now, and then I have the last few episodes of season 3, and all of season 4 on tape.

and I do usually tape every new episode of "Alias" while I watch it, but only because I like to watch each episode twice, because it's easy to miss stuff on that show the first time around. and then I usually end up taping over the episodes. I only have a couple of random episodes of Alias on tape to keep. So I don't tape that show to keep it (but if it ever comes out on DVD, I'll totally buy the DVD's.)

and then Wings is the only other show that I've been taping every episode, intending on keeping the tapes... I don't know why.. I just fell in love with this show, and I'd love to have it on tape so that when it's not on TV anymore, I can still watch it when I want.
We'd all love for it to be released on DVD, but in the meantime, I'm in the process of creating my Wings tape collection.
So I guess with me, that just shows how special this show is. it's only the second show that I've ever actually liked so much that I wanted to tape and keep every episode...

I think one of the reasons why we tape the episodes is because when they air crap on tv we always can pop in a tape and watch wings ...

Pilotguy, I guess just like everything else in life, it's a matter of personal choice and taste, but I taped several episodes of Wings when it originally aired on NBC, and now I tape several episodes on nick at nite just for the heck of it. I still pray that Wings will eventually be released on DVD, but I'm not counting on it.

It's kind of an odd thing, because some shows that I enjoy I just don't have the desire to see over, while some shows I never tire of. For me, I just think it comes down to the quality of the writing, coupled with the chemistry of the actors. A friend of mine recently purchased the Frasier DVD and I borrowed it from him and really enjoyed watching the episodes and I may very well buy a copy for myself. But the writing and the acting is so good that I can watch Frasier over and over and never tire of it. And since the same team that produces Frasier (Angell, Lee and Casey)...[sadly not Angell anymore of course]...produced Wings and I just think their writing and production quality is so strong, it's a pleasure to watch. Then you add the quality chemistry and acting among the cast members and I never get bored. I can watch Tim Daly or Steven Weber or Crystal deliver a line I've seen several times and I'll still look forward to seeing it again.

But I did tape several episodes of Frasier over the years and I taped every episode of Twin Peaks, and have the DVD, but it is rare that I do that. The quality of the show has to be very special, and although Wings never got much praise, I still think its quality was special. 6 years after it went off the air, here I am on a message board talking about it and watching it every chance I get.

I taped "Wings" off of USA because I was afraid they would quit showing it. I had no idea it would come to N@N. But I tape shows just to have that feeling that I own the show. Or something like that. It gives me a little power. I can watch any episode of any season whenever I want. Also there are sometimes when I watch an episode for it's third time, or whatever, where I just observe the extras. Or I watch everyone's facial expressions. I get something new out of each episode each time I watch them. Sometimes, I just get a scene in my head and I have to watch it.

I also taped every episode of "NewsRadio," which is my favorite show. "Wings" goes back and fourth for the 2nd spot competing against "Andy Richter Controls the Universe." As a result of taping all these shows, I'm gonna make my own Block Party Summer (as posted somewhere else).

I feel the way Adam does. I like to have certain shows on tape so I can go back and watch them anytime I want to. The series I want are X-Files, Twin Peaks, Northern Exposure, Wings, and Seinfeld. I think Seinfeld has been so popular that it will eventually come out. I have all of X-Files, and Twin Peaks, and am slowly getting Wings. I think Northern Exposure was a fantastic show, and I just hope it will be released someday.

It's all about control. I can watch what I want when I want to!

But there are very few shows that I want to watch more than once. In fact, "Wings" and "The X-Files" are the only 2 shows I've ever taped. "Wings" is a special sitcom, IMO and always makes me laugh... and TXF was just so incredibly special in so many ways.

And I must say that although I will watch certain eps of TXF over and over, my main purpose for taping them at the time was so that I could watch them two or three times... cuz that's what was needed to understand them.

Love,

Wing<><

A friend (and fellow "Wings" fan) of mine uses the "pick and choose" method of taping....

Because the show is shown at 1 AM EST, he can't stay up to watch it, so he tapes each episode and watches it the next day.

If the episode is a really good one, he considers it a "keeper" and doesn't tape over it....however, if the episode doesn't do much for him, he'll tape the upcoming "Wings" episode over it and then check the NEW episode out to see if THAT one is a "keeper".

So far he has about 8 T-120' videocassettes filled with "Wings" episodes (all recorded at the Standard Play speed), and you might say that he considers these kept episodes to be a "Best Of" collection...at least they're "Best Of" to HIM!

That sounds like a cool way to do it Pilotguy. Sometimes I find that a Wings ep isn't all that great (very rare mind you), but I can't help but tape them all anyway. To me it's like a story that works consecutively, and I want them all without any missing.
I've been leaving spaces on my current tapes for the ones they're skipping, so when they do air I'll just cue the tape to record them where they belong, <g>.

First off, this story does have a purpose.
In an episode of "Andy Richter Controls the Universe" Andy buys a second TV set for his bedroom. So if he feels like turning over on his side "Bam" there's another TV. Then he rolled to his other side, and said how he considered getting a third TV, but something about having 3 TV's in one room just seemed sad. But the more he knew he couldn't turn to that side, the more he wanted to.

My point is that if I just picked which episodes to keep, I'd eventually want them all. Because the more I'd think about the episodes I don't have the more I'd want them.

Seinfeld is coming to DVD soon. I read over at TVShowsonDVD.Com Amazon also has Northern Exposure on their list of shows coming out soon too, as well as NewsRadio and The Cosby Show.

I know that when Sept 11th happened at the time I only had 6 channels after awhile you get sick of looking at the same thing day in and day out. I thank god that I had taped some of my favorite TV shows because all 6 channels where Sept 11th.

Growing up as the oldest of two brothers, I developed a real connection to Wings. This is definitely my favorite sitcom of all time. My wife and I watched religiously during first-run on NBC and would catch occassional episode on TBS. We've even taken a couple of vacations to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Like everyone else, I've been waiting patiently for the commercial DVD release of Wings, but have pretty much given up.

Until recently, I never recorded any TV shows to keep. I consider myself somewhat of a videophile, so if I recorded anything to keep, it was in 2-hour mode on SuperVHS tape. Unfortunately, this was impratical because of the number of tapes a show like Wings would require, the shelf space needed to store the tapes, and the amount of time required to redub the show to eliminate commercials (plus the generational quality loss).

Fortunately, about a year ago I bought a DVD recorder to convert all of my home movies to DVD. In combination with my satellite PVR, I can burn 4 complete commercial-less episodes of Wings onto a DVD in original sequence. Using double cases, I can fit 4 disks (16 high quality recordings) in less space than a single VHS tape. Quality is almost as good as S-VHS - it looks good on my 50" Mitsubishi - great on anything smaller.

Assuming that N@N replays the episodes that they've skipped, I hope to have all 172 episodes on DVD by the end of summer. I have NO intentions of selling copies, but I may be interested in working out some sort of trade for certain episodes if N@N comes up short on these missing episodes.
