Default To New Yorkers or anyone else who might know

Sorry for this "to New Yorkers" post, but I must know!

Anyways, is it true that you will be fined and ticketted if you're caught sleeping on the subway or putting your bags on an empty seat?

I was taking the subway today after school... there were about 20 empty seats, so I put my bag on the seat next to me... and this woman taps me on the shoulder and tells me to put it on my lap. She told me she heard from the press that there is a $25.00 fine for doing so. I went home...did some research on NY1.com and haven't found anything on it. I've also asked my classmates; they said they've heard the same thing, as well.

So...is it true, or is some rumor to prevent people from taking up extra seats and sleeping on the train?
Thanks.

I'm not from New York but I could see a law being started to prevent sleeping on the subway but is it a crime to put your bag on an empty seat? That would be a pathetic law.

I guess the MTA's concerned about people taking up seats for their stuff instead of offering them to other passengers...? But I don't see why we can't do this on a half-empty cart.

OT, sorta: Why is it
"an MTA employee"
and not
"a MTA employee?"

If this is happening I never heard it. Anyway if someone had their bag on the seat and I would be standing I would tell them to remove their bag so I can sit.

Not unless they looked like a NUT...... Then I would just stand.

Its "an" because phonetically MTA it sounds "em-tee-ay"
and with a word that starts with a vowel or vowel sound, you use "an" before it.

Like "an HBO employee" (long a sound). ay-ch-be-oh
or "an alien"

Over the weekend I read in the paper a tourist dozed off on a subway and a police officer woke him up and gave him a ticket for taking up two seats; apparently, he slumped over when he was asleep.

Recently there has been a major ticket blitz here in NYC for tiny law infactions, taking up two seats on subways, sitting on crates outside stores, a pregnent woman got a ticket for sitting on subway stairs waiting for her train.

I really don't know how I feel about this. While I try to support my local Police, I think their time could be better spent.
If they want to write tickets (and rack up some serious $$$ for the city) why aren't they cracking down on drivers who use cell phones? They made a big deal about this new law when it was passed, yet I see plenty of drivers on the phone when I walk around. Double parked cars are another problem. Go after those guys, and leave the poor pregnant girl alone!

I'm TJL, and I'm running for Manhattan Borough President.

My sister told me that yesterday, Jenny. She said some guy yelled at her for putting her books down on the seat next to her. She said she just thought he was nuts.

It probably is true..after all, NY does have the stupidest laws.

Ahh, thanks. I've always thought it was based on the spelling, with the exception of the "h."

If you ask me, I think it's all going a little too far. It's like the city's trying to jip every cent in your pocket. Pretty soon, we'll be fine for leaning on a pole. And I agree with you that the police's time can be much better spent...much better.

TJL for borough president!

Just wondering... what'll happen if we don't pass the regents? Do we get left back or something-- summer school, maybe?

I have to take 4. If you fail, you retake it in January...you just keep taking it until you pass. Are you taking the Earth Science regents?

Really? You won't have to take the class again if you fail?

I'm taking the biology regents this year. Heck, I don't even remember what I did this morning-- let alone remember the stuff back in September. These regents are just here to drive HS students insane, I tell yah.

Nope, if you pass the class your done with it. My friend passed Eath science, but had to keep re-taking that regents until he passed(it took 3 tries).

I'm taking the Bio too..I took the Earth Science last year. Some how I managed to get an 84, when i never payed attention. But i did study for 3 days straight. You should get the Barrons book if u dont already have it...that was the only reason i passed.

I hate stressful tests. and it sucks if you don't pass it, you don't graduate with a diploma.

I have the "Reviewing The Living Environment: Biology: with sample examinations" by Rick Hallman book. It's a very good one. Short and to the point. I hate textbooks that go on and on about stuff we don't really need to know.

When are you taking it? Maybe we'll be taking the same one?

You don't get a dipolma if you don't pass?? Uggh, I guess I should start cracking, lol.

One more question: Will I be able to graduate if I don't pass? 'Cause if I won't... then I guess I should start cracking, lol.
I think all of NY takes it the same day, and its the same test, b/c its a state exam.

If you don't pass all your regents, you won't get your diploma. it used to be you can get your local diploma without taking them, but they just passed some law that says you need it. and it also used to be a 55 was passing, but now for us its 65.
