Default Question about the ratings of a new sitcom after its first season

There was a sitcom by the name of Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers which made it's debut in the fall of 1974. The show was number 25 in the ratings and was canceled halfway through the season. So a sitcom that ranks number 25 is not a good thing?

Maybe it followed a show with big ratings? "Inside Schwartz" was #13 for the 2001-2002 season, will anyone even remember that show in a few years? Didn't that come after "Friends"?

Yes the show came on after All in the Family. So since it followed a show with big ratings what does that mean?

Naturally with a big show like "All in the Family" there were plenty of people who were going to stick around to watch a new (or any) show immediately following, even if it was crappy (I don't know of that show so I can't say if it was). I'm not 100% sure how the ratings work but maybe it counts towards the ratings when a person only watches the first few minutes of the show? Then of course the show would've received some nice ratings even though people may have not stuck around for the entire show, maybe someone else has more info on this.

Like the 'Jackie Thomas Show' was #18 for 1992-1993 and it followed 'Roseanne' which was #2 at the time.

Since it was schedule between two huge hits (AITF and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, CBS was expecting much higher ratings. This is also the same reason that CBS gave for cancelling Bridget Loves Bernie, although that show was #5 when it was cancelled.

Sean i found out the real reason why Bridget Loves Bernie was canceled. It wasn't because of the ratings because the show was ranked too high. It was canceled because the show publicized mixed marriages and religious groups were furious because of that.
