Friday marks the debut of "Bruce Almighty" starring my favorite comedian and fellow Canadian Jim Carrey, Morgan "Easy Reader" Freeman, and the mega-exposed co-star of "Friends" Jennifer Aniston.
Now while it's true that the presence of Jim Carrey and a return to his wildly comic side should make this a huge success, having Jennifer Aniston in it should help too, as she tries to re-create the chemistry that Carrey had with her co-star Courtney Cox in "Ace Ventura". This is an important step in the career of Mrs. Brad Pitt. With "Friends" expected to start its final season this September, leaving a huge hole to fill on Thursday nights, you can expect the 6 stars to concentrate on their movie careers once the series ends, hoping to follow in the footsteps of other former TV greats like Robin Williams, Ron Howard, Tom Hanks, Sally Field, etc. With that in mind, I was curious to see how their films have done so far at the box office, concentrating solely on the films that each of them have made since "Friends" debuted in 1994, with the exception of "Ace Ventura", which was a huge hit in the summer of 1994 and was still going strong when "Friends" debuted that same fall. What I found was that all 6 have made their share of huge blockbusters ("Charlie's Angels") as well as their share of pitiful, forgettable turkeys ("Ed"). In each case, it seems that timing is the biggest factor in a movie's success. It helps to be in the right place, and in the right project, at the right time. Here are the official North American box-office totals for each movie that I could find that the 6 "Friends" have made since 1994: JENNIFER ANISTON SHE'S THE ONE (1996) 9.4 million dollars PICTURE PERFECT (1997) 31.1 mil. TIL THERE WAS YOU (1997) 3.3 mil. THE OBJECT OF MY AFFECTION (1998) 29.2 mil. THE IRON GIANT (cartoon voice) (1999) 23.2 mil. ROCK STAR (2001) 17 mil. THE GOOD GIRL (2002) 14 mil. SCREAM 3 (2000) 89. 1 mil. 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND (2001) 15.7 mil. LISA KUDROW MOTHER (1996) 19.1 mil. ROMY AND MICHELLE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION (1997) 29.2 mil. THE OPPOSITE OF SEX (1998) 6.3 mil. I believe they can all be very proud of their movie accomplishments over the past several years. Some of the movies may not be as memorable as others, but all in all, they are pretty good. Two of my favorites are "Romy & Michelle" and "Ace Ventura." Silliness...maybe, but I watch a movie to be entertained and these two are both quite entertaining.
