I can answer the question about where it was supposedly set. There are several real Mayfields, including one in Ohio. There are many hints in the show that Mayfield is in Ohio near Cleveland, such as references to Shaker Heights and Euclid Avenue, but there are other hints that completely contradict the idea that it's in Ohio. The general concensus is that the producers refused to pin it down so as to reinforce the impression that Mayfield is Anytown, USA.

but it couldn't be in Ohio Mayfield had a big beach where wally was gonna be a life guard. so anyway you look at it, it's just Mayfield USA.

I thought Wally was a lifeguard at Friends Lake.
I definitely think it's in Ohio. |

I'm fairly sure the statement was made that the "ocean is miles away," which would eliminate Ohio as a possibility.

I know, but I think that was just a kind of california amalgam kind of thing that they threw in there. don't even pay attention to it. it was in ohio. or the midwest at any rate and no part of the midwest is near the ocean. since it's never hinted at being in california (which would be geographically logical, no winters, etc, near the ocean) the whole feel was a midwestern one, so you can't take the ocean reference too seriously.
