In this 1964 episode Marlo Thomas guests as Mrs. Brown's brainy niece Paula who, due to her unnecessary glasses, baggy clothes and frumpy hair makes Tim think she's unattractive (but she looked perfectly good to me). Anyway, with a little Martian magic (no glasses, form-fitting dress and mod hairdo), Uncle Martin transforms her into the beauty we all know but Tim was too blind to notice! BTW, she looked almost a live-action deadringer for . ..Daria Morgendoffer
An odd title- as at no point To her credit, Marlo made this most of this rather lame premise and made her character sympathetic and three-dimensional even though Paula came close to discovering the Martian origins of Martin's alloy! Thankfully, she was still brainy by the episode's end and had married her formerly nebbish but transformedly handsom suitor played by. . . Tom Skerritt. was she referred to as Miss Jekyll! I wonder if Skerritt remembered Ray Walston when he became a 'Picket Fences' star and pitched for him to become Judge Bone? |

The actual story is that David E. Kelley remembered Ray Walston as a judge in the film "Above the Law" and that lead to his being cast in "Picket Fences."
Thankfully, it was his acclaim (and pair of Emmys) in that role that helped him to "come to terms" with "Martian" late in life. |

Right. But the 1986 film's title was "From the Hip" and it was written by David E. Kelley.

Thanks so much!! I really appreciate your kind words and I'm very glad to know that you enjoy my site!
Another guest actor who appeared on MFM and later guested on Picket Fences was Arthur Malet (Dr. Dunlap in The Man From Uncle Martin episode). |
