Sad "Happy Funeral, Bender"

We've known it was cancelled for quite some time, but now FOX made it official. Here's an article I found on one of my favortie Futurama sites.

-----------------------------------

Crew: "Surprise!"
Fry: "Happy funeral, Bender!"
Bender: "A surprise funeral? For me?"

Well, not really a surprise. FOX announced their Fall 2003 schedule and there's no place for our lovable rascal, says the entertaining FOX president Gail Berman. Instead, Oliver Beene will take over the 7PM death-slot for a while. He'll likely be replaced mid-season by a British-made Japan-style humiliation game show called Banzai featuring elderly people in wheelchairs playing a game of chicken to the commentary of a fake cliché-Asian voice.

What's left for us? Besides buying the various merchandise and the still appearing comics, say thanks to the people at Rough Draft and Curiosity Company! I'm probably one of the persons who got the most out of Futurama (sounds nerdy, but it isn't, if you ignore that I found her in a filthy Futurama chat room ). So thanks from me, too!

I'm just not sure if I'll show as much enthusiasm for a show on FOX anymore.

(Executive summary: Starting next season, Futurama will not show on FOX anymore.)

--------------------------------

Here's a little more commentary I found on the site regarding what was going on with the show since it was put on hiatus in February of 2002.

--------------------------------

Our petition reaches the 6 digit realm within 2 months.

FOX keeps pre-empting Futurama, ending season 4 after no more than 12 episodes.

Futurama's Roswell that Ends well is nominated for the Emmy and wins it, too.

Season 2 DVDs are released in Europe - a huge success.

The Animation Writing Award goes to Futurama producer/writer Patric Verrone.

Futurama McSeason 5 starts and only gets to show 8 episodes in the traditional season time.

Futurama gets two Annie nominations and wins one for director Rich Moore.

Cartoon Network starts airing Futurama late the evening - with huge success for the station.

Futurama Executive Producer gets a Writers Guild of America Award nomination and beats KotH and 3 Simpsons episodes to it.

Our petition is handed in: 130,000 fan signatures - no reaction by FOX.

Season 1 is dispatched on DVD in the USA - and about everyone gives it great reviews (scifi.com as the latest).

gotfuturama's daily access and visitor numbers more than doubled in this time period.

------------------------------

Rest in Peace Planet Express crew. I thought this was somewhat of an appropriate picture.

This is sad. That Banzai show is the single worst thing I have EVER seen on TV. WHAT THE **** IS UP WITH FOX?? They cancel every good show on the damn network, yet give airtime to terrible shows.

I haven't seen Banzai yet, but based on the commercials, it doesn't look good. But at least FOX is advertising Futurama for it's last few episodes. The last episode is scheduled to air August 10. After that, we can watch in delight as Oliver Beene gets constantly pre-empted, cancelled, and replaced by Simpsons reruns. If that show gets cancelled, it would be the funniest thing ever to happen to Oliver Beene.
